Economic Impact As Columbia County's largest employer,
BU is also one of the region's major economic drivers, annually contributing more than $121 million to the local economy. BU's total statewide economic impact is more than $357 million and is responsible for creating more than 4,100 jobs across the state and 1,400 jobs locally.

Spending by the university and its students, visitors, faculty and staff generates more than $148 million and indirect revenues for local individuals and businesses total nearly $209 million.

BU recently funneled more than $85.8 million back into the region through a series of on-campus renovation and construction projects, most visibly on the upper campus where $45.2 million worth of construction has been done. Another $25.7 million has been invested in lower campus projects to total nearly $71 million infused into the region through BU construction projects since June 2008.

Economic Development

BU Impact
• The Husky Research Corporation - formed in order to further the educational and scientific purposes of BU by serving as a contracting agent for grants and contracts.
• Industry Partnership Grant - used to establish Bloomsburg Technology Partners, a consortium of regional businesses, economic development agencies, Workforce Investment Boards, and Ben Franklin Technology Partners.
• Workforce Leadership Grant - used to establish a seamless program of articulated credits from the secondary, to the two-year postsecondary, to the four-year postsecondary levels, in computer forensics.

Human Capital & Workforce Training
• Corporate Training - BU Corporate and Continuing Education professional trainers can assess workforce needs to assist companies in improving work processes with customized training and consulting services.
• Customized Job Training - BU assists regional businesses through economic development in seeking funding under the statewide Customized Job Training grant program administered by Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development.
• WEDnet PA-Guaranteed Free Training - BU can assist companies in seeking free training dollars to meet the company's ongoing training needs.
• Workforce Development - BU's Division of Corporate and Continuing Education specializes in assessing the training needs of the regional workforce and working with companies to customize training programs that are responsive to the development of their incumbent workforce.

Entrepreneurial Business Assistance
• Bloomsburg Regional Technology Center - located in the Greater Susquehanna Keystone Innovation Zone, the Tech Center combines the beauty and elegance of an historic structure with communications infrastructure to handle the needs of any technology-driven enterprise.

Commercialization & Technology Transfer
• Greater Susquehanna Keystone Innovation Zone - a program that fosters local job growth and creates a "knowledge neighborhood" for educational institutions, economic developers, businesses, capital sources and community leaders alike to connect with one another quickly and effectively.
