Activities: something for everyone

A common report from students at BU: it's impossible to be bored.

Participation in about 200 student organizations that form a broad spectrum of interests is only the starting point for activities on Bloomsburg's campus. The social whirl begins within a few hours of moving in with a host of events to break the ice and get acquainted.

Fall semesters begin with activities fairs to help new students connect with organizations that interest them. Much of the social side of BU is built around facilities and opportunities for student groups to function conveniently for members.

Most student organizations fall under Community Activities, governed by students through the Community Government Association (CGA), not unlike the familiar Student Council. CGA owns and operates Kehr Union, the Student Recreation Center and University Store. Other student governance includes residence hall councils and at least one current student is appointed to the University Council of Trustees.

In addition to the many on-campus groups, BU students are also active in community service organizations, local churches and local politics.

Kehr Union is a magnet for socializing, and Andruss Library is one of the most popular places to congregate. The university's program board presents first-run motion pictures on a deeply discounted basis and brings regionally and nationally known groups to campus for concerts. BU also brings internationally acclaimed entertainment to the campus through the Celebrity Artist Series and hosts such annual events as Parents Weekend and Siblings Weekend.

Recognized social greek organizations include 11 fraternities and 14 sororities, and both Catholic and Protestant campus organizations offer a full slate of activities and worship.

Frequently asked about: Cheerleading is an activity and active primarily in football and basketball seasons. The university's dance team competes with other colleges and has about 300 participants. The Maroon and Gold marching band welcomes non-music majors to its contingent.

High adventure, around the the world

Quest is modeled on the international Outward Bound program and provides students with opportunities for outdoor adventure. Weekend courses in areas such as rock climbing and kayaking are offered, as well as extended trips to wildness areas of the United States and other countries. Quest also offers leadership and teambuilding experiences for student groups and others.

Intramurals and clubs - sports for fun

Three seasons of intramural sports programs at BU plus a number of club sports attract participation by nearly 2,000 students in activities for men, women and co-ed. While intramurals is strictly campus competition, many of the club teams organize competition with other colleges and universities. These are distinct from BU's NCAA intercollegiate athletic program, and most are headquartered at the student recreation center. The Rec is a 78,000 square-foot fully-equipped fitness center on campus and is used daily by about 1,800 students.
