Clinical Laboratory Science (B.S.)

Clinical laboratory scientists perform many of the laboratory tests used in the detection, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases. As part of the health care team they contribute data on blood, tissues, and fluids using a variety of precise methods and technologies. The program of study combines natural science and liberal arts education with clinical instruction. Students complete 90 credit hours (3 years) of core science and general education classes at Bloomsburg followed by one calendar year in a hospital clinical program accredited nationally by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS).

Bloomsburg's program is rigorous and demanding. It attracts individuals who have strong quantitative and analytical skills. Students should be prepared to study in both an academic and clinical environment and have a strong background in all the sciences.

During your three years at BU, you'll study medical terminology, molecular biology, human genetics, microbiology, cell biology, medical microbiology, immunology, statistics, computer science and basic and organic chemistry and biochemistry. You'll work with your academic adviser to round out your program with general education and elective courses that support your career directions and interests.

During your clinical experience in a hospital program, you'll study clinical microbiology, hematology/coagulation, chemistry for med techs, immunohematology, immunology/serology and clinical seminar.

Students who change their minds or are not selected for clinical at the end of their junior year can change their major and readily satisfy the requirements for the Bachelor of Arts in Biology during their senior year. Students may continue to seek admission for the clinical year while completing their degree.

Advisement. Biology and Allied Health Sciences faculty serve as advisors to clinical laboratory science students-guiding them in their course selections and various other academic and professional activities.

Clinical Placement. In the past five years, the clinical placement rate for these students has been 100 percent. It is anticipated that this high placement rate will continue in the foreseeable future. Admission to the clinical year experience is not automatic, however. Students begin the application procedure after completing two academic years, usually the summer following the sophomore year. Assistance in making application for admission is offered by the university, but admission is determined solely by the clinical affiliates. Presently, Bloomsburg is affiliated with eight hospitals; however, clinical experience may be taken at any hospital with an accredited program.

Students who successfully complete all of the requirements and the clinical year earn a Bachelor of Science degree. All clinical year graduates become eligible to take the certification examinations for clinical laboratory scientist/medical technology. Upon successfully completing one or both of these examinations, the student is awarded a certificate of registry and the designation Medical Technologist (M.T.) (ASCP) or Clinical Laboratory Scientist (C.L.S.) (NCA).
