Criminal Justice (B.A.)
Among Bloomsburg's newest and more popular programs, Criminal Justice is designed to give you a firm liberal arts education in sociology and criminal justice with a strong theoretical component. You'll examine the theoretical concepts and research methods of the field and computer data analysis and prepare you for graduate study or immediate employment in the criminal justice field.
The program provides you the opportunity to explore the causes of social problems with respect to race, class, gender, crime, the political economy, age, health, work, punishment, victimization and deviance. You'll be encouraged to think critically about the structure and dynamics of social groups, institutions, ideology and the society.
Through the criminal justice sequence, you'll learn about justice, enforcement and corrections systems, police work, investigation and victim's services
You'll take courses in sociology, criminolgy, government, psychology, criminal justice statistics and research, juvenile delinquency, penology, mass media and crime, criminal law, white collar crime, victimology, constitutional law, and cap it off with an internship. Working with your advisor, you'll selected options from general education requirements and free electives that tailor the program to your specific interests and career goals.
Factors suggesting success in the program include strong people skills and the ability to work with diverse populations and good academic performance.
Students from the program have been placed in diverse settings in Pennsylvania and surrounding states for internships and graduates report good placement rates. Internship settings include juvenile and adult probation offices; county, state and federal correctional facilities for adults and youth, U.S. Marshal's offices, the Federal Bureau of Investigation; Department of the Treasury; offices of attorneys and legal services; forensics programs, victim advocacy programs, women's centers and a variety of specialized systems.
There is also a criminal justice student organization that arranges for guest speakers from various institutions and organizations.
