Sociology (B.A.)

Sociology is a great major for students interested in people, families, society and social institutions, especially when combined with the Applied Sociology option. Sociologists are interested in the interplay between individuals and society - the conditions that influence the actions people take and the effects of their actions on others.

Because of the abstract nature of the subject matter, students must have very good study habits to do well in this discipline. Beyond taking the four required core courses listed below, students have considerable flexibility in the courses they select; eight of the additional sociology courses required, four must be at 300 or 400 level, excluding internship. Internships are optional within the major, but those interested in field experience will work with their advisor to choose one that helps fulfill learning goals. A concentration in the major is applied Sociology.

Students who have majored in this area have developed careers in diverse fields, including sales, fashion merchandising, personnel, data analysis, outcomes assessment, insurance and social work. They have also attended graduate school and gone on to college teaching, designing computer instruction, social work, law and research.

You'll begin with core courses in principles of sociology, research methods for social inquiry, basic social statistics and socological theory, then work with your advier to select eight additional sociology courses plus general education requirements and electives.

Students interested in an applied sociology program will study principles of sociology, research methods for social inquiry, basic social statistics, sociological theory, urban sociology, social problems of urban and rural communities, contemporary social problems, medical sociology, microsociology, computer applications and the sociology of aging, plus an internship.

Students who major in Sociology may also elect to do an option in Applied Sociology, which is somewhat more structured. Applied Sociology is an exceptional option for those who want to experience "doing sociology." All students in the Applied Sociology option must do a six to 15 credit internship, usually with a governmental or nonprofit community-based organization. Internships often create links for future employment.
