Bloomsburg's programs in the sciences, technology and mathematics offer a variety of options, concentrations and minors that students can bundle to tailor their education to specific career interests.
Students who plan to enter graduate or professional school in the natural sciences and of those seeking employment in the private sector and government agencies can pursue a bachelor of science degree. Those interested in greater freedom of course choices and such careers as outdoor education and biological illustration would find the bachelor of arts program attractive.
Bachelor of science majors may also opt for concentrations in biotechnology and microbiology.
The Biological and Allied Health Sciences department also houses programs of study in clinical laboratory science, medical imaging, pre-physical therapy, pre-occupational therapy, pre-cytotechnology, and preparatory work for admission to schools of medicine, dentistry, pharmacy and veterinary medicine.
The bachelor of arts program is specially designed to prepare students for further study in pharmacy and engineering, usually on a "three plus two" basis with three years at BU and two years at another university for Pharm.D. or engineering degrees as well as the bachelor's from Bloomsburg.
The bachelor of science program is oriented toward entry level work in the chemistry field or special preparation for advanced study in graduate schools. The package includes ACS certification.
Bloomsburg also offers a specialized bachelor of science track in clinical chemistry that includes a year of advanced work in a major hospital setting and is attractive to those interested in careers in medicine and pharmaceuticals.
The increased use of computers to commit crimes and the growing demand for computer-based data in civil proceedings has created a need for individuals with the expertise to extract useful information from computer evidence. The Bachelor of Science in Computer Forensics prepares students for careers as computer forensics specialists who can work with law enforcement, homeland security agencies, law firms, and private companies. Bloomsburg University offers the only Computer Forensics Bachelor's degree in the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education.
Gives students a thorough grounding in the design, production and analysis of software. Both the practical and theoretical issues involved in software and its development are emphasized. Students also obtain a basic understanding of hardware and its principles, particularly as it influences software. Mathematics is an essential tool in the curriculum. Students work in a variety of computing environments, ranging from single-user personal computers to multiple-user minicomputers and mainframes. Graduates are prepared for either further study in computer science or employment in the software industry. A minor in web design is available.
Students get a solid foundation in geology and/or the earth sciences to prepare graduates for entry-level employment in the earth science profession or for acceptance into highly competitive graduate programs in the geological sciences. In addition to the major in Earth Science, the program also offers options in Environmental Science and Planetary Science.
Prepares students to apply current engineering practices to communications control and electronics manufacturing. Technologists are typically involved in product development, manufacturing, quality control or sales. The five-year program is structured so students serve two seven-month paid apprenticeships. This arrangement means students pay tuition for only four years. Reflecting Bloomsburg's close relationship with the electronics industry, the curriculum has been shaped with input from industry leaders who serve on the program's advisory board.
Enables students to pursue a career in engineering while experiencing the broader scope of a Bloomsburg University education. This cooperative program of study leads to two baccalaureate degrees, one in Science and Technology awarded by Bloomsburg University and one in an area of engineering from either The Pennsylvania State University or Wilkes University. Candidates spend three years at Bloomsburg followed by two years at Penn State or Wilkes.
Three options provide the education necessary for a wide range of careers in government, industry and business. Both Urban/Regional Planning and Environmental Planning provide a broad-based background in the planning field to prepare students for positions in the public and private sectors or prepare them for graduate study. A general geography option allows students considerable flexibility in tailoring a program of study to meet individual needs.
The profession is devoted to protecting people and their environment from potential radiation hazards. The program provides a foundation of courses in physics, mathematics, chemistry and biology, as well as specialized courses in health physics. Modern laboratories introduce students to state-of-the-art instrumentation and advanced techniques of measurement.
The mathematics program provides a thorough background in both the theoretical and real-world applications of mathematics. The curriculum and instructional strategies are designed to encourage and promote critical thinking and problem-solving skills, the articulation of mathematical ideas and the effective use of calculator and computer technology. A track and a minor in statistics is available.
Bloomsburg's program enjoys a strong reputation in both business and the academic community and offers 100 percent placement rates in business and graduate programs. Among career paths chosen by mathematics majors are actuarial science, statistical analysis, operations research analysis, software engineering, industrial engineering, numerical analysis, cryptology, systems analysis, decision analysis and teaching.
Provides the knowledge and skills desired by a variety of industrial employers and graduate schools. Students may study nuclear physics, astrophysics, applied physics and laser physics using state-of-the-art equipment. The Bachelor of Arts is more limited in scope than the Bachelor of Science degree and is usually combined with an engineering degree (see Engineering and Liberal Arts).
Bloomsburg University offers degree programs in such social sciences and health sciences as Anthropology, Sociology, Exercise Science, Audiology and Speech Pathology, Nursing and Psychology
