Clinical Athletic Training (M.S.)

The entry-level master's program in Clinical Athletic Training prepares students to function as health care providers in injury prevention, recognition and treatment. The program follows a competency-based approach in preparing students to think conceptually and analytically. The entry-level graduate program is open to all students who have completed a bachelor's degree with a minimum GPA of 3.0 in a related field and who meet the admission criteria.

This two-year master's degree program building on the department's graduate exercise science program that has enrolled more than 200 students in the past decade. The curriculum is designed for full-time students, who will attend three semesters in the first year and two semesters in year two.

A total of 48 credits is required for completion of the M.S. in Clinical Athletic Training.

The professional preparation of an entry-level athletic trainer is directed toward developing specific competencies in risk management and injury prevention, pathology of injuries and illnesses, assessment and evaluation of injuries, acute care of injury and illness, pharmacology, therapeutic modalities, therapeutic exercise, general medical conditions and disabilities, nutritional aspects of injury and illness, psychosocial intervention and referral, health care administration and professional development.

Admission Criteria

  • Completed application and acceptance into graduate school.
  • Completed application and acceptance into the Clinical Athletic Training program (Deadline: May 1).
  • Completed Graduate Record Exam. Scores must be current (within last seven years).
  • Completion of the following pre-requisite coursework with a C grade or better prior to acceptance:
  • Minimum of 200 hours of direct clinical observation/experience under the guidance of a Certified Athletic Trainer. Must submit a letter of verification from the Certified Athletic Trainer at time of application
  • Current First Aid and Professional Rescuer CPR certifications (including adult, child, infant CPR, and AED)
  • Completion of an interview with the program director and faculty
