The Temptation of the Muses - Nai-Ni Chen with the Ahn Trio

Drawing from elements as opposite as the flowing lines of Chinese calligraphy and the thundering motion of the martial arts, Nai-Ni Chen is one of the very few established Asian-American choreographers who meld the dynamic freedom of American modern dance to the stoic discipline of the Chinese classical arts.
Performing live on-stage with the Ahn Trio, in Temptation of the Muses the dance company and the trio are in perfect collusion, with the dancers performing their movements to the music, among the instruments and the players. The show’s centerpiece, entitled “Concrete Stream,” was created by contemporary composer Kenji Bunch.
Born in Korea and educated at the Julliard School, the Ahn’s have built a distinguished reputation reflecting the two cultures they grew up in, embracing the music of living composers, forming unique collaborations, and bringing new energy and excitement to the genre of chamber music.
“Like visual poetry, Chen’s phrases, part exoskeletal rigidity, part boneless grace, embody epic dignity,” — Village Voice
