To use the best available evidence in nursing practice, the nurse needs to be able to tell the difference between articles that use numbers (quantitative), words (qualitative), and summaries of findings (systematic review articles) and to acquire them through searching online databases. In this half-day session, participants will briefly examine each type of literature, consider key features of each, and then personally search online databases on a topic of interest. Participants will also learn about the different ways in which these sources present the results in order to better understand how they can be used in practice. Contact hours: 3.0 per session

Horizontal (or Lateral) Violence is a fairly new term used to define, among other things, interpersonal abuse in the workplace. Negative relationships can become passive-aggressive and harmful to the self-esteem of coworkers. Horizontal Violence is more prevalent in high stress jobs, such as nursing. This situation can be particularly oppressive for new employees -- thus the saying, "They eat their own." It is ironic that a caring profession such as nursing is prone to meanness and self-destruction. Equally inconsistent is the fact that nurses need more nurses, and yet some members of this group facilitate their own high attrition rate. This CE course addresses the underlying cause and potential solutions for Lateral Violence.

Fact: Working in a clinical setting is not the same as working in a nursing education setting and vice versa. In this day of nursing faculty shortage, the participant can learn more about the organization and expectations of a college setting and employment. This understanding may promote a smoother transition in a new role of nursing faculty member in a part-time, full-time, temporary, permanent, or adjunct position. It may encourage more expert clinicians to consider sharing their knowledge and skills with students through a faculty position. Knowing what key questions to ask during an interview based on organization and expectations can promote success as well.
