75.225 Linguistics of ASL - An historical overview of social and linguistic events that have influenced transformations in ASL; an introduction to structure and organizational properties of ASL as identified through linguistic research; review of other languages that share similar organizational principles; a discussion of semantic hierarchy and framework for analyzing semantic properties of ASL.
Spatial Mapping -This course will study visual gestural aspects of communication that are an integral part of ASL. This course will focus on the discourse of how to use space and spatial mapping when interpreting. This course will review the importance of classifier use, visual gestural communication and how to tie it together with spatial mapping.
ASL in the Classroom - This course will focus on how to incorporate features of ASL appropriately in the educational setting. Participants will learn appropriate ASL signs and how to find conceptually accurate signs for your interpretation. Interpreters can learn new ASL signs to incorporate in the day to day interpretations.
75.260 Interpreting in the Educational Setting - Study of interpreting within a variety of educational settings including postsecondary, secondary and elementary areas. Topical areas include: recent legislation on the status of interpreters, characteristics of various meetings and visually coded English Sign Systems.
