The Department of Management Information Systems and Computer Information Systems, in the College of Business, offers a baccalaureate degree program in Computer and Information Science (CIS).
The Department of Management Information Systems and Computer Information Systems offers a degree program that prepares students for careers as professionals in the field of computer-based information systems. The programs focus on the use of information technology to solve business and organizational problems and to enhance decision making. The department emphasizes an experiential, interactional approach to learning using methodologies. Students learn the skills they will need as professionals by analyzing systems and developing software to solve business problems.
The Department supports the missions of the College of Business and Bloomsburg University by offering courses that introduce students to computer concepts and end-user application software at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. The department serves the college, the university and the community in diverse ways, particularly in the area of information technology.
Within the context of its educational mission, the department is also committed to the development of knowledge in the field of information systems through applied and/or basic research.
The CIS curriculum prepares students in the development, operation and maintenance of computer-based information systems for the business environment. The program's focus centers on commercial software and hardware with an emphasis on problem solving, system analysis and design, data management, data communications and software development within a commercial context.
CIS has a strong technical emphasis. While students are required to take courses in economics, accounting and other areas of business, the majority of the required coursework is in computer and information science. Students work in a variety of environments including networked micro-computers and workstations, multiuser minicomputers and mainframes. The program prepares business students for positions such as: application programmer, programmer-analyst, systems analyst, data base administrator and information specialist.
Students enrolled in this program enjoy use of a dedicated computer lab with current technology on a mainframe computer of sufficient size to operate a medium-sized corporation.
Graduates enjoy an extremely high placement rate in a field where demand for professionals is high and the future remains quite bright.
The B.S.B.A. in Management Information Systems administered through the Department of Management Information Systems and Computer Information Systems offers a solid program in Information Systems to our business students. It offers a blend of theory and practice, technical knowledge and business knowledge. It requires these majors to take the business core.
The Management Information Systems major provides undergraduate students with an enhanced understanding of information systems backed with a solid foundation of business knowledge. Students in this major learn the tools necessary to work with information technology to manage the business information asset. The major provides an excellent grounding in information systems practices in use today.
The minor in Computer and Information Systems is designed to provide students majoring in non-computer disciplines with a background in computer and information systems. The program will enable students to develop a strong foundation in information systems, particularly in the areas of programming and systems analysis and design. Information technology is critical to the success of the modern business. Today, businesses are looking for individuals with multiple skills: knowledge of marketing, finance, economics, biology, chemistry, but who also understand information technology. A minor in CIS will enhance career opportunities for Bloomsburg University graduates.
The Master of Business Administration (MBA) program offers management education designed to impart business expertise and strengthen leadership skills. Successful students will demonstrate mastery of knowledge in management, marketing, accounting, finance, and information systems. The program provides the theoretical, analytical and operational expertise managers need to meet the challenges of managing human and material resources in dynamic, competitive environments. The curriculum consists of 36 graduate credit hours delivered in 8 required and 4 elective courses. Students without sufficient preparation also complete prerequisite foundation courses.
Most on-campus courses meet one evening each week for 15 weeks in spring and fall semesters. Summer semester courses meet two evenings for 6 weeks. Courses are described in the graduate catalog. Classes meet on the Bloomsburg campus and at convenient Williamsport sites. Most students are part-time and take 1 or 2 courses each semester.
The course schedule requires a minimum of one year of full-time study to complete. Most part-time students finish in 3 years. Students must comply with Graduate School and MBA program policies and procedures, completing all requirements for graduation with an average grade of B (3.00/4.00 G.P.A.) within six years.
