Field Experience

In addition to our targeted work with teacher candidates, Bloomsburg University remains committed to serving its public school partners and the achievement of all students in PK-12 schools.

Bloomsburg University teacher candidates working in field and clinical settings often serve as an important resource to schools across the region. In order to evaluate the field experience component of our programs, a system for ongoing assessment has been developed.

The data collected from the assessment of candidate performance is used by each teacher education program to refine and improve its field placements and subsequent clinical experiences. The Unit is committed to ongoing assessment as a process for developing new field sites and enhancing existing field-based experiences for all teacher candidates.

Guiding principles for quality field experiences include:

  • Field experiences are designed and delivered for the candidate to make explicit connections with content areas, cognitive development, motivation and learning styles.
  • Field experiences allow the candidate to observe, practice, and demonstrate course competencies, under the supervision of education program faculty and under the mentorship of certified teachers.
  • Field experiences allow the candidate to progress from observation to teaching small groups of students under the mentorship of a certified educator at the pre-student teaching level, to the culminating student teaching experience.
  • Field experiences are on-going throughout the program, aligned with coursework, and inclusive of varied experiences in diverse environments.
  • The candidate is provided field experience to learn and apply the complex knowledge, skills and professional dispositions required of effective teachers.

All professional education programs within the Unit provide evidence of the candidate’s participation in developmental field experiences and student teaching under the supervision of University Faculty and Cooperating Teachers who are well trained, highly qualified, and who demonstrate competence in teaching and mentoring in the field of education.

Each program provides evidence, through unit-wide and unique program assessment processes, that the criteria and competencies required for exit from the certification program is assessed through coursework, field experiences and student teaching. Each candidate demonstrates their knowledge and competence in fostering student learning and child well-being in addition to incorporating a self-reflective emphasis.

The experiences take place in collaborative settings to give the candidate exposure to the values, culture, and working styles of diverse learning environments. This includes learning about the socio-emotional and academic traits of all students and gaining experience with the collaborative approaches to teaching through direct observation and participation in teaming and co-teaching models.
