A Message from the General Education Task Force

In its June 25, 2009 reaccreditation letter, the Middle States Commission on Higher Education recently asked Bloomsburg University to provide a report due April 1, 2011 that includes “steps taken to strengthen general education, including the development of observable learning goals appropriate to higher education and institutional mission and stated as outcomes and the implementation of a documented assessment process for general education.” Based on this requirement, Interim Provost Dr. Ira Blake met with the General Education Task Force on September 28, 2009 to issue a revised charge. You may view the charge by clicking appropriate menu item along the left side of this page.

There has not been a comprehensive review of BU's general education program since its inception approximately thirty years ago, although some changes in the program have been made from time to time. Therefore, it is both reasonable and prudent that we as a university review our program as to its learning objectives and how it achieves them, how general education courses contribute to the learning objectives, how well the program is meeting its objectives, what might be done to enhance the program, and how we should assure that review of the program is ongoing.

To accomplish our charge, which includes an ambitious timetable, we endeavor to foster a "conversation on general education" across the campus. Please check here on a regular basis for information about the work of this task force. We have also requested to report on the work of the task force at each BUCC and Forum meeting, will distribute reports and requests for input via email and post progress on this website.

Most importantly, should you have any questions regarding the work of the Task Force, please do not hesitate to contact the members; an updated list of members can be found using the menu on this page.
