Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STD)

STD testing options:

• For free confidential STD testing, call Columbia Montour Family Health, (570) 387-0236 to schedule an appointment on or off campus. Appointments are available each Monday on campus (third floor McCormick Center for Human Services). Family Health's main office is at 2201 Fifth Street Hollow Road, Bloomsburg
• Evaluation, testing and treatment of STDs can be done by the providers at the Student Health Center. However, testing costs will be the responsibility of the student or testing may be billed to the student's health insurance.

  Since many students are covered under their parent's health insurance, testing confidentiality may not be guaranteed. Treatment costs will also be the responsibility of the student. These services are not covered by the health center fee. Again, HIV testing is not available at the Student Health Center.

Other Reproductive Health Services

• Reproductive health services (including birth control) are available for a fee at Columbia Montour Family Health, 2201 Fifth Street Hollow Road, Bloomsburg. Fees for services are dependent upon individual income and can be billed to your health insurance.

  Hours are Monday, Thursday and Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Tuesdays, 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. Call (570) 387-0236 to make an appointment. Family Health staff also see students on campus one day a week during the fall and spring semesters. For more information, call Family Health (570) 387-0236.

• Gynecological services are also available at the Bloomsburg OB/GYN Associates in the Bloomsburg Hospital Medical Arts Building. Associated with this practice are Dr. Sheila Garnia, Dr. Ben Montgomery, Dr. Mickey Levine and Nurse Practitioner, Sherry Derr. For appointments call (570)387-BABY.

Emergency Contraception

Also known as the "Morning After Pill," emergency contraception is available at the Student Health Center for $30. The Morning After Pill (called Plan B) is most effective if taken within 72 hours of unprotected intercourse, but it may be effective up to 120 hours.

Plan B contains a synthetic hormone called progestin, commonly used in birth control pills. It thickens the cervical mucus and alters the lining of the uterus to prevent the implantation of a fertilized egg. However, if a pregnancy is already established (meaning the egg has already implanted), the Morning After Pill probably won't affect the pregnancy or the developing fetus.

To obtain the Morning After Pill at the health center, call a Triage Nurse at (570) 389-5055, (570) 389-3800 or (570) 389-2722. The Triage Nurse will schedule an appointment as soon as possible. Or, you may call the main health center number and schedule an appointment (570) 389-4451.

Prior to receiving Plan B

• A pregnancy test will be performed prior to dispensing the pills.
• The provider at the health center will discuss birth control options and reproductive health, along with prevention of STDs.
• Plan B cannot be purchased from the Student Health Center "just to have on hand-just in case". Also, Plan B cannot be purchased from the health center for someone else.

The Morning After Pill can also be purchased at participating pharmacies for students 18 years of age or older. You must ask the pharmacist for assistance if you wish to purchase Plan B from a pharmacy.
