Jazz and the Civil Rights Movement

Jazz and the Civil Rights Movement

Flutist Galen Abdur-Razzaq will give a free public performance-based lecture, “Jazz and the Civil Rights Movement," on Tuesday, Feb. 26, at 7 p.m. in Carver Hall's Gross Auditorium. Abdur-Razzaq studied at the Berklee College of Music and holds a master’s degree in fine arts and education from Rutgers University. His multifaceted career has included serving as a music teacher and band director in New Jersey and performed performing internationally and across the U.S. for more than 30 years.

Abdur-Razzaq will also lead a workshop, “The Jazz of Poetry,” at 1 p.m. in Gross Auditorium, featuring readings by BU student poets T. Clark; Adelina Socouto; Julia Miller and Dan Pintos; as well as community River Poets Steven Concert, Linda Dietrichson, and Carol Ann Heckman. The poetry will be underscored by an improvised jazz flute line.

A typical mass communications internship tends to be in marketing or some type of media; but not for Andrew Fox, who took a different route this summer with Mack Trucks, Inc. This senior didn’t build trucks either. Instead he was writing scripts, filming and directing small films for Mack’s training department.
