Catalog of Library Holdings

The Andruss Library Pilot catalog is accessible via the World Wide Web. The catalog includes entries for books, periodicals, newspapers, government documents, microfilm and microfiche collections, company reports, maps, musical recordings and musical scores. The Pilot program is used to identify materials, determine circulation status, and then identify by call number these materials within the library's collections. When Pilot is unavailable, use Access Pennsylvania.

Help screens will answer many of your questions about Pilot, which is our version of Endeavor Information System's Voyager library system. You may also access the help screens of the Library of Congress which also uses the Voyager catalog system.

Course Reserve

This mode does not search our collection per se; it searches only those items that have been placed on reserve for specific courses. Use the Course Reserve button to search for items by a professor's name, a course name, a department or a course section. Simply click on the arrows beside the desired field and select from the list.

To check out reserve material, you must complete the Reserve Material Request Form, which requires you to write down the title and Reserve ID number of a Reserve item.

Setting Search Limits

Notice that no matter which searching mode you select, there is a "Set More Limits" button located near the right bottom of the screen. Clicking on this button permits you to limit your Pilot results by years of publication, language, location, format, etc.

Viewing Records

Once you have formulated your search, click the "Search" button to create a list of titles matching your terms. Click on any title in the list to view the full record for that item. The following example is a record for a book that is on the shelves and is available to be checked out (Status: Checked In).

A CD-ROM version of access Pennsylvania may be used in the Library when the Internet is down

Circulation System

Holding Books Presently in Use

Placing a hold is the process of reserving a currently-charged-out book. If the patron who currently has the book charged out has had it for 30 days or more, a notice requesting the book's return will be sent to that patron. If a patron has had the book for fewer than 30 days, the notice will be sent on the 31st day. When the book is returned to the Library, the Library will send a notice of availability to the patron placing the hold and keep the book at the Circulation Desk for 7 days.

Procedure:

  • 1. Search the Pilot catalog for the book you need.
  • 2. DIsplay the record.
  • 3. If "Charged" appears at the bottom of the record, the book is checked out and a hold may be placed by clicking on the "Request" button on the top of the page.
  • 4. Enter the information requested and choose "Hold."
EXCEPTIONS: 1) Holds may not be placed on Reserve material; 2) Holds may not be placed on a book if other copies of the same book are available for check-out.
Pilot will place your hold and you will receive notification in the mail when the book is available. The book will be held for you for 7 days after the book is returned to the library.

Recalls

Material that has been in circulation for more than thirty days is subject to recall upon request. Recalls must be initiated at the Circulation Desk on the first floor. Patrons will be notified when material has been returned either by phone, e-mail, or mail as per stated preference. Recalled material will be held at the Circulation Desk for seven days. Please remember that holds are not recalls. If you have placed a Hold on material you will not be notified that it is available until it has been returned. This could be up to twelve months. Therefore, if time is a factor, you are advised to initiate a Recall on an item rather than place a Hold on it.

Renewals

Library material may be renewed in person by bringing the item(s) to the Access Services Desk OR you can make a ONE-TIME renewal online, making a trip to the Library unnecessary. To renew a book online, click on the “Catalog (PILOT)” link on the left side of the Library’s web page. From PILOT’s “Search” screen, click on the “Acct Info” button, enter your LIB number and your last name. You will be presented with a list of all materials currently charged to you. Click in the box on the left side for each title you wish to renew and then click on the “Renew Items” button at the bottom left of the screen. NOTE: Except for items on Reserve, Library materials may be renewed online once only, unless it has been requested by another user. Additionally, TO RENEW MATERIAL ONLINE, YOU MUST DO SO AT LEAST TWO DAYS BEFORE THE ORIGINAL DUE DATE. After that deadline, you must bring the item to the Access Services Desk in person.

Reviewing Your Record Status

To verify the personal information contained in your circulation record and to display such information as number of books charged to you, any fines due, or books overdue, use the "Account Info" button. Provide the library number from your university identification card and your last name. It is not possible to print the status information directly; however, you may copy the data and paste it into a text editor or word processor for printing.

Connecting To Pilot

Selecting or clicking on "Connect" below will take you to the Pilot catalog. No log on is required. You may also connect directly using the "Catalog" button from our Home Page.
