Spring 2012

Lights, Action ... Rich Uliasz '97

While I was working on McEnroe, we booked celebrity chef Rocco DiSpirito and I mentioned to the Producers that I use his recipe for baking biscotti. The Producers thought it would be a cool idea for me to bake up a batch and be a guest on the show for Rocco to try them.

On April 17, 2009, CNBC celebrated it's 20th Anniversary and I, along with 200 employees, was part of the closing bell celebration that ended the trading day on Wall Street.

On May 6, 2010, the stock market had what was labeled a "flash crash." The Dow Jones dipped over 900 points and quickly rebounded in about a 20 minute time frame. In all my years at CNBC, I've never experienced an event that completely froze everyone in their seats.

We're in the business of reporting stock market news, but this event was so unprecedented that we all basically stopped working behind the scenes and were glued to our on-air anchors and reporters.

We couldn't comprehend that the market was nearing a 1,000 point drop in a matter of minutes...and just as quickly, we watched stocks rebound. I've never before seen the whole place stop working altogether...and I'm amazed that I got to experience that event from behind the scenes. It kind of connects the story from when I did my 7th Grade Social Studies report on the '87 crash.
