Celebrity Artist Series opens 2005 with an opera
For Immediate Release
Date: January 20, 2005
BLOOMSBURG—Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania’s Celebrity Artist Series will welcome Opera Verdi Europa back to campus for the first show of 2005. The internationally recognized touring group, which works with many major Bulgarian opera theaters and symphony orchestras, will perform Giuseppe Verdi’s famous opera, “Aida,” on Sunday, Feb. 6, at 2:30 p.m. in the Haas Center for the Arts, Mitrani Hall. Opera Verdi Europa, on its second United States tour, performed “Rigoletto” during BU’s 2003-2004 Celebrity Artist Series.
Verdi’s timeless tale of “Aida,” set in ancient Egypt, portrays an Ethiopian princess who finds herself torn between her homeland, her family and an Egyptian officer who loves her. Regarded as Verdi’s most extravagant and popular opera, the work has found a new audience through Elton John and Tim Rice’s hit Broadway musical similarly titled, “Aida.”
Tickets for the performance of “Aida” are $22.50 and $25. To order tickets, call the series box office at (570) 389-4409 or check the Celebrity Artist Series Web Site at www.bloomu.edu/events.
