BLOOMSBURG — Female students in middle school and high school who are interested in math and science can apply for a week-long summer experience through Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania’s College of Science and Technology.

Students who will enter sixth, seventh or eighth grades in fall 2007 can apply for the Math and Science Summer Experience for Young Women; students entering ninth, 10th or 11th grade in the fall can apply for the CSI (Crime Scene Investigation) Summer Experience for Young Women. Both programs will run Monday to Friday, June 25 to 29, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Both camps will provide students with the opportunity to explore different aspects of science and math through class presentations, hands-on activities and demonstrations. Middle school students will learn about computer forensics, secret codes, motion geometry and chromatography; high school students will learn about computer forensics, secret codes, DNA collection and archeological forensics. Both programs will conclude with a panel session featuring women in math- and science-related fields.

The cost of each program is $150 for applications received by Friday, April 27, and $175 for applications received by Friday, June 8.

Scholarships are available for both programs. Applicants should submit a letter of request with their application, explaining the need for the scholarship and how the scholarship will help with their mathematical and science goals. Applicants should also submit a letter from a current math or science teacher, explaining the applicant’s abilities in math or science.
