For immediate release: March 28, 2008

BLOOMSBURG — The legendary Broadway musical “Evita” will be performed on Sunday, April 13, at 8 p.m. in Haas Center for the Arts, Mitrani Hall, as part of Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania’s 2007-08 Celebrity Artist Series.

The winner of seven Tony Awards and a Grammy Award, the Tim Rice/Andrew Lloyd Webber collaboration “Evita” tells the story of the wife of Argentina’s President Juan Peron through song and dance. Beginning in 1934, the musical follows Evita’s rise to prominence as an advocate for the working class who obtains wealth and power. The show’s best-known song is “Don’t Cry for Me, Argentina.” Tickets are $25 for adults; $12 for BU students and children age 12 and under.

Since its debut in 1979 with Patti LuPone in the title role, “Evita” has been produced in major cities worldwide. The show ran for 1,568 performances on Broadway before closing on June 25, 1983 and a new generation was introduced to “Evita” when the film adaptation starring Madonna and Antonio Banderas opened in 1996.

The last program in the Celebrity Artist Series’ 22nd season will be the BU Jazz Festival, featuring Bobby Zankel & The Warriors of Wonderful Sound, Friday on April 25, at noon. Tickets are $5 for adults.
