For Immediate Release: April 17, 2008

BLOOMSBURG — A barbecue, followed by the showing of the 1975 film, “Rocky Horror Picture Show,” will cap off Ally Week, running Monday through Friday, April 21 to 25, at Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania, sponsored by the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) Commission. The barbecue will begin at 4 p.m. on the basketball courts near Columbia Residence Hall and the film will be shown at 9 p.m. in Columbia Hall Living Learning Community.

According to Julie Vandivere, associate professor of English and director of the social justice living learning community, Ally Week is being held in conjunction with the National Day of Silence, an annual observance designed to draw attention to anti-LGBT name-calling, bullying and harassment in schools. All events are free and open to the public.

T-shirts featuring the slogan, “Gay? Fine By Me.” will be available at Kehr Union each day during Ally Week at a cost of $6 each. Vandivere expects up to 1,000 members of the campus community to wear the shirts Friday, April 25,the National Day of Silence, in support of BU’s “commitment to diversity through education, support, advocacy and the fostering of equity for all members of the university community, particularly on issues related to sexual orientation and gender identity.”

Other events planned for the week include a program, “For the Bible Tells Me So,” Tuesday, April 22, at 6 p.m. in McCormick Center, room 2303, and a training session for student leaders and other members of the campus community, “What Do I Do(Say) When…?” Wednesday, April 23, at 7 p.m. in Columbia Living Learning Community.
