Theater group comes to BU for Earth Day
For immediate release: April 14, 2009
BLOOMSBURG — Bread and Puppet Theater, a politically involved theater company, will perform Wednesday, April 22, at 5 p.m. in the Academic Quad of Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania. The performance will be offered as part of Earth Day and the International Festival events, running from Monday to Friday, April 20 to 24.
The Vermont-based group is one of oldest, nonprofit, self-supporting theatrical companies in the United States. They use a street-theater brand of performance art that combines music, dance and slapstick. Bread and Puppet uses huge puppets made of paper maché and cardboard with a brass band for accompaniment.
Founded in 1963 by Peter Schumann on New York City's Lower East Side, Bread and Puppet incorporates complex theater pieces in their performances. Many performances include audience members and are presented outdoors.
The event is sponsored by the College of Liberal Arts, English department, Office of Diversity and Retention, LGBTA Commission, gender and women's studies minor and living and learning communities.
