Walnut Street Theatre comes to BU

Walnut Street Theatre: The Glass Menagerie For immediate release: Jan. 25, 2011

BLOOMSBURG — The Walnut Street Theatre opens its first national tour in nearly 200 years of existence with a performance of “The Glass Menagerie” as a part of Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania’s 25th anniversary season Celebrity Artist Series. The performances will be held on Thursday, Feb. 10, at 7 p.m. and Friday, Feb. 11, at 8 p.m. in the Kenneth Gross Auditorium in Carver Hall. General admission is $25.

This new production of “The Glass Menagerie,” one of famed playwright Tennessee Williams’ first successes, marks the 100th anniversary of his birth.

Located in Philadelphia, the Walnut Street Theatre is the oldest continuously operating theatre in the U.S. and has hosted legendary performers such as Marlon Brando, Sidney Poitier and Katharine Hepburn.
The theatre’s first theatrical production, “The Rivals,” was staged in 1812. In attendance were President Thomas Jefferson and French aristocrat and American general, the Marquis de Lafayette.

The Walnut Street Theatre’s “The Glass Menagerie” is the first spring semester Celebrity Artist Series performance in the 2010-2011 season. Upcoming shows, all in Haas Center for the Arts, Mitrani Hall, are:

  • DRUMline Live, Saturday, Feb. 18, at 8 p.m. Tickets: $30
  • Hot 8 Brass Band, Friday, March 4, at 7 p.m. Tickets: $25
  • Rioult Dance, Saturday, March 26, at 8 p.m. Tickets: $30
  • Spring Awakening, Friday, April 8, at 8 p.m. Tickets: $30
  • Stefon Harris, Friday, April 28, at 7:30 p.m. Tickets: $30
