BLOOMSBURG — Russian scholar Boris Lanin will lecture on “Reforming Literary Education in Post-Soviet Russia” on Tuesday, March 1, at 7 p.m. in Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania’s Andruss Library, Schweiker Room. The lecture, in English, is free and open to the public.

Lanin is principle researcher professor in the literature department at the Russian Academy of Education in Moscow. He is the author of more than a dozen books and more than100 journal articles, as well as several of the most widely assigned textbooks on literature used in contemporary Russian elementary and secondary schools. Lanin, currently a fellow at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, Washington, D.C., has held fellowships at Stanford University, Central European University in Budapest and Hokkaido University in Japan.

The lecture describes efforts taken since 1990 to expand the amount of literature in Russian schools. Lanin’s textbooks have opened Russian literary school classes to a variety of authors who were previously banned or whose themes were considered politically and ethically unacceptable.
