“The Nutcracker” balancés in holiday season

BLOOMSBURG — The State Ballet Theatre of Russia will perform “The Nutcracker” on Friday, Dec. 2, at 7:30 p.m. in Bloomsburg University’s Haas Center for the Arts, Mitrani Hall.

This event is part of BU’s Celebrity Artist Series. Tickets are $29.50 for adults and $16.50 for children.

The classic holiday fairytale will be the Ballet Theatre’s second show in Bloomsburg in as many years. Last year, the company performed “Sleeping Beauty” as part of the Celebrity Artist Series.

Founded in 1961, the Ballet Theatre’s repertoire includes both classic dances and modern Russian compositions. The troupe has performed all over the world, visiting countries in Africa, Asia, Europe and North America.

Several of the dancers have been honored for their talents, including People’s Artist of Russia Tatyana Frolova and Honored Artists of Russia Vladislav Ivanov, Mikhail Negrobov and Piotr Popov.

Upcoming events for the 2011-12 season of the Celebrity Artist Series, all in Haas Center for the Arts, Mitrani Hall, are:

  • Philadelphia Virtuosi Chamber Orchestra, Friday, Feb. 12, 2012, at 7:30 p.m. Tickets: $34.50.
  • The National Broadway Tour of the musical “The Color Purple,” Saturday, Feb. 18, 2012, at 8 p.m. Tickets: $34.50.
  • Complexions Contemporary Ballet, Saturday, March 31, 2012, at 8 p.m. Tickets: $34.50.
  • Jazz musicians Grace Kelly and Phil Woods, Friday, April 13, 2012, at 7:30 p.m. Tickets: $34.50.
