Volunteers give back to Town of Bloomsburg

The Big Event For immediate release: March 19, 2012

BLOOMSBURG — More than 1,000 Bloomsburg University students have pledged to participate in the 2012 Big Event, a community service project, on Saturday, March 31, from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Sponsored by BU’s student government, the Community Government Association (CGA), The Big Event is “a great opportunity for students to express our gratitude to the Town of Bloomsburg,” said David Abrams, CGA president. “As Bloomsburg University students, we recognize and appreciate that we are temporary visitors in a community of permanent residents and, therefore, wish to continue our positive relationship with the town.”

During the Big Event, BU students will tackle outdoor clean-up projects around town, as well as at private residences. Projects will include raking, weeding, replanting, sweeping and picking up trash or other debris. Additionally, some students may participate in specific relief projects related to the 2011 Bloomsburg flood.

The Big Event The Big Event will begin with an opening ceremony at the Bloomsburg Town Fountain, Main and Market streets. The opening ceremonies will include breakfast and remarks by campus and community leaders. Once provided with the necessary equipment, members of campus organizations, including athletics, fraternities and sororities, as well as individual students will be bused to locations throughout the town. CGA has raised more than $10,000 for this year’s Big Event, including major support from Home Depot, Bloomsburg University Foundation, Lion’s Gate, Honeysuckle and Greystone Housing.

“Over the past three years, we have worked to ensure that the Big Event becomes a Bloomsburg tradition – one that both students and town residents look forward to each year,” Abrams said. “As we have reached record participation and financial contributions, CGA is confident we are approaching our goal. We are truly excited to have been given the opportunity to organize such a meaningful community project.”
