Broadway comes to BU with ‘American Idiot’

For Immediate Release: Feb. 21, 2014

Bloomsburg University's Celebrity Artist Series

BLOOMSBURG — The award-winning national Broadway tour of “American Idiot” will make a stop at Bloomsburg University as a part of the Celebrity Artist Series and in celebration of BU’s 175th anniversary.

The performance will be on Friday, March 7, at 8 p.m. in Haas Center for the Arts, Mitrani Hall. Tickets are $45 for adults and $22 for children and BU students. “American Idiot” contains adult content and strong language.

Green Day’s album, “American Idiot,” exploded on the punk rock music scene in 2004 selling more than 12 million copies to become one of the best-selling albums of all time and winning the Grammy for Rock Album of the Year. A Broadway creative team brought the rock opera to the Broadway stage, led by Michael Mayer, the Tony Award-winning director of “Spring Awakening”; Tom Kitt, the two-time Tony Award-winning composer and orchestrator for “Next to Normal”; and Steven Hoggett, the Olivier Award-winning choreographer for “Black Watch.”

The show tells the tale of three lifelong friends: one who will fight for his dreams, one who will fight for his country and one who will stay behind, frozen in the safety of suburbia. It features an expanded adaptation of the concept album, including every song from “American Idiot,” some unreleased tracks and a few songs from the group’s “21st Century Breakdown” album.

Upcoming BU Celebrity Artist Series productions include:

  • “Swan Lake,” classical ballet, romantic tale of Prince Siegfried and Princess Odette – Saturday, March 29,  at 8 p.m. in the Haas Center for the Arts, Mitrani Hall. Tickets: $35
  • The Pedrito Martinez Group, world-class conga player, singer and bandleader – Saturday, April 13, at 7 p.m. in Carver Hall, Kenneth S. Gross Auditorium. Tickets: complimentary but required.
