RATIONALE FOR POLICY

To provide a procedure for nominating and conferring Bloomsburg University executives, managers and administrators to Executive Manager or Administrator Emeritus status.

KEYWORDS

Executive Emeritus; Manager Emeritus; Administrator Emeritus; emeritus

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

The original policy was written sixteen (16) years ago.The Procedure language is a bit confusing concerning who nominates individuals for emeritus status. The revisions are intended to make the policy more clear while also adjusting other eligibility requirements.

The revisions to the new policy a) reduce the years needed to be considered for noninstructional emeritus status from fifteen (15) to ten (10); b) define the word ‘executive’; c) require written justification from the department supervisor describing why the individual should receive emeritus status; d) list the specific departments that the noninstructional emeritus or emerita should contact to receive the specific privileges; e) list the word ‘Executive’ in the policy name.

POLICY

Eligibility

To be eligible for emeritus status at Bloomsburg University, an executive, manager or university administrator shall:

  • Have retired or resigned as an employee of Bloomsburg University.
  • Have served with distinction for a minimum of ten (10) years at Bloomsburg University.
  • In the case of the Bloomsburg University president, the Council of Trustees, at its discretion, may determine the eligibility for emeritus status and confer this designation upon the president.

Procedure for Conferring Emeritus Status

  • A. Executive (Vice President, Dean): Within one calendar year after acceptance by the president of the retirement or resignation of the executive, the most senior of the remaining executives, in terms of service to the university, shall conduct the nomination of the executive to emeritus status. If a majority vote of the executives concurs, the nomination shall be forwarded to the president of the university with written justification describing why the individual should be awarded emeritus status.
  • B. Manager or Administrator: Within one calendar year after acceptance by the president of the retirement or resignation of a university manager or administrator, the president/vice president of the eligible employee’s department shall conduct the nomination of the manager or administrator to emeritus status. If a majority vote of the managers or administrators in any and all departments of the retiring or resigning individual within the last 3 year concurs, the nomination shall be forwarded to the president/division vice president of the university, with written justification describing why the individual should be awarded emeritus status.
  • The president of the university may then recommend emeritus status for an executive, manager or administrator and present his/her recommendation at a regular meeting of the Council of Trustees for its action.
