Dear Campus Community,

The Presidential Search Committee will conclude its work by presenting the names and dossiers of two candidates for the presidency to the Council of Trustees at its special meeting on April 26, 2016. It is an exciting time as we celebrate the many accomplishments of Dr. Soltz and look forward to welcoming our next president! The search committee is delighted with the results thus far and eagerly awaits the next phase of the process.

Guided by the university mission, vision and values statements and the leadership profile, which was developed in consultation with the campus and local communities, our executive search partner, Witt/Kieffer, generated a pool of highly qualified candidates for the committee’s review. The search process was open and inclusive and encouraged full community participation and the opportunity to provide feedback.

Comprehensive candidate due diligence has been completed by the committee and the executive search firm including:

  • Review of all feedback received;
  • Extensive and thorough reference check review (both “on-list” and “off-list”) and additional follow-up as necessary;
  • Comprehensive media and public record review;
  • Verification of employment history, education, certification, and other professional degrees and credentials;
  • Review of the competency/leadership assessments administered by Witt/Kieffer to the four candidates completing a campus visit.

The required background check clearances and credit checks are in process and will be completed prior to the presidential appointment as required by the State System.

The two candidates to be presented to the Council of Trustees are experienced academic leaders who possess the vision and leadership qualities to build upon the institution’s reputation and continue the university’s forward momentum in preparing students for personal and professional success in an increasingly complex global environment. Both individuals have a passion for the mission of public education and possess the qualities necessary to effectively advocate for the university, articulate the institution’s values, and fundraise with the university’s many and broadly based constituents. The search committee believes that these two candidates would continue our tradition of excellence, enhance our co-curricular programs and activities, advance the institution’s enrollment/retention goals, leverage our academic strengths in an effort to deliver a high quality student-centered experience, and add to a communication infrastructure that informs and engages the campus community.

On behalf of the entire committee, thank you for your active participation, engagement, questions, and concerns voiced during this process. The selection of a president is one of the most important decisions that a university can make. The search committee embraced its responsibility to present two highly qualified candidates to the Council of Trustees with enthusiasm and a genuine concern for the best interests of Bloomsburg University. It was my privilege to work with such a diverse and engaged group of individuals who are proud to be associated with BU and genuinely care about its success.

Sincerely,
    Mary Jane Bowes

    Vice-Chair, Council of Trustees

Dear Campus Community,

On Dec. 6 to 7, 2016, the Presidential Search Committee conducted a series of open forums to collect suggestions, recommendations, and advice from campus constituents and community leaders to help outline expectations for the next president of Bloomsburg University. As a result, the search committee, in partnership with the University Marketing and Communications office and executive search firm Witt/Kieffer, has developed a dynamic institutional/leadership profile to be used as part of the recruiting process, effective immediately.

The search committee will begin its review of candidates in early March 2017, with the goal of having the new president appointed by May 2017. Select candidates will be invited to campus in April to engage in dialogue with campus constituents. The campus community will have an opportunity to participate in the interview process and provide feedback during the April visits.

As a reminder, a presidential search webpage has been created to keep the campus community informed and updated on progress of the search.

Sincerely,
    Mary Jane Bowes

A message from Trustee Chair, Patrick Wilson

Nov. 16, 2016

Dear Campus Community,

Dr. David Soltz’s leadership over the past nine years has produced significant accomplishments for Bloomsburg University, including the development and implementation of our strategic plan, Impact 2015, now extended to 2017; the successful It’s Personal capital campaign, which has exceeded its $50 million goal; new or renovated facilities, as outlined in the campus master facilities plan; and numerous innovative academic programs. In addition, Dr. Soltz has worked tirelessly to maintain the financial stability of Bloomsburg University in these challenging budgetary times.

The Presidential Search Committee’s goal is to build on this strong foundation and continue Bloomsburg University’s forward momentum as we prepare students for personal and professional success in an increasingly complex global environment.
The search is being conducted in accordance with Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education’s Board of Governors Policy 1983-13A. The 15-member Presidential Search Committee, led by Trustee Mary Jane Bowes, includes trustees, a university executive, several faculty members, non-instructional employees, a student, an alumnus, and a member of the Bloomsburg University Foundation Board of Directors. A liaison from the State System’s Office of the Chancellor and a current president from a sister institution will serve as non-voting members.

A series of forums will be held on Dec. 5 and 6, to seek input from faculty, staff, students, and community members to develop the leadership profile for our next president. A presidential search webpage has been created to keep the university community updated and informed on the progress.

Executive search firm Witt/Kieffer has been selected to assist in the national search for a new president who will build on Bloomsburg’s past and lead for the future.

At the end of the process, the Council of Trustees will submit the names and dossiers of two recommended candidates to Chancellor Frank T. Brogan. The State System’s Board of Governors will interview the recommended candidates and select the 19th president of Bloomsburg University.

Sincerely,
    Patrick Wilson, Chair
    Bloomsburg University Council of Trustees

Statement from Trustee Chair, Patrick Wilson

Sept. 22, 2016

Dr. David Soltz announced his decision to retire as president of Bloomsburg University effective June 30, 2017. The last nine years under his leadership has produced significant
accomplishments for Bloomsburg University including the development and implementation of our strategic plan, Impact 2017, a successful It’s Personal capital campaign, new or renovated
campus facilities as part of a campus master facilities plan and numerous innovative academic programs.

In addition, Dr. Soltz has worked tirelessly to lead the efforts to maintain the financial stability of Bloomsburg University in these challenging budgetary times. We have a solid foundation to continue our forward momentum.

As we say farewell to one president, the Council of Trustees will work with the Chancellors office to begin the search process for a new president. We will seek a president to continue our
tradition of excellence, enhance our co-curricular programs and activities and leverage our academic strengths in an effort to deliver a high quality student-centered experience.

The presidential search process is pre-defined by the university's governing body — the Board of Governors of PASSHE. Policy 1983 – 13A, Guidelines for Recommending Presidential
Appointment, describes the process.

It is our expectation that the presidential search committee will be formed in the near future. It is the intent of the Council of Trustees not to have an interim president. We will be working with a professional search firm to assist us. Each presidential search is unique and can take between six to nine months until a new president is identified and appointed.

The Bloomsburg University Council of Trustees highly appreciates the contributions and dedication of Dr. David Soltz during his tenure as president. All comments or inquiries may be directed to me at pwilson@bloomu.edu.

Sincerely,
    Patrick Wilson, Chair
    Bloomsburg University Council of Trustees
