Hosting students for job shadowing, academic internships

Businesses and organizations partner with the university to gain access to a pool of exceptionally talented student applicants for academic internships and job shadowing, or what is known as experiential learning.

To host a BU student for an academic (for-credit) internship, a legal document called an affiliation agreement, must be signed by your organization. Typically, these agreements run for a term of five years. Even if your organization does not have a current internship opportunity available, it is advantageous to have a signed agreement on file with the university. Organizations may offer paid or unpaid internships. Some assist the student by providing a stipend to cover costs, such as for transportation, housing, meals. Students work in conjunction with a faculty adviser for an academic internship and may receive between one and 15 credits upon successful completion. One credit equals 40 hours in the workplace.

BU’s Sophomore Experiential Learning program or SEL is a 3-5 day program (20-40 hour) program during which a student shadows an employee in a career field of interest. Students do not earn academic credit for completing the Sophomore Experiential Learning job shadowing program, but they do receive a notation on their transcripts for successfully completing the experience.
