Bloomsburg's Jason Helcoski Named First PSAC East Baseball Player of the Week
BLOOMSBURG —Bloomsburg University baseball standout Jason Helcoski (Jessup/Valley View) has been named the first Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division Player of the Week for the 2002 season it was announced Tuesday. Helcoski, a senior first baseman, is hitting .434 for the year (2nd on team) with a team-high nine home runs and 33 RBI. Helcoski has scored 22 runs and has 33 hits on the season and also leads the team in walks with 13. His nine home runs are five shy of the school single-season record and nearly equal his career total of 12 coming into the year. This past Sunday Helcoski hit a walk-off homer to lift the Huskies to a 3-2 win over Division I Bucknell. In game one of the doubleheader with Bucknell, the tri-captain for Bloomsburg was 2-3 with three RBI in a 9-5 loss to the Bison. Helcoski started slowly this season going one for his first nine, but has since rebounded to hit .492 (32-65). While down in Florida Helcoski put together a streak of six consecutive hits over two games with two home runs and five RBI. He also hit safely in 10 straight games on the team's annual trip south. Bloomsburg is 15-8 on the season and is within one victory of equaling it win total from all of last season. The Huskies host Shippensburg Thursday in the start of the PSAC Eastern Division play. |
