Bloomsburg Splits With Mansfield in Baseball

MANSFIELD —The Bloomsburg University baseball team split a twinbill with Mansfield University Sunday afternoon dropping game one 6-5 and winning game two, 11-2.

In the nightcap the Huskies exploded for 11 runs on 13 hits to earn a split. The Huskies put three runs on the board in the second inning to grab a lead they would never give up. Brian Zorger opened the inning with a single and one out later came home on a Tim Kelleher two-run homer. Chris Husted, David Manter and Mark Reiter then hit consecutive singles with Reiter getting an RBI.

The Huskies made it 6-1 with three more runs in the fourth. Mark Reiter, who walked, later scored on an error for one run. Brian Martin also added a two-run single in the single in the inning.

In the top of the seventh Bloomsburg put the game away when it scored four more time. Martin had a solo home run leading off the inning, while Manter added an RBI single, Also, Josh Beddall had a fielder's choice RBI with Reiter getting a bases loaded walk for the final run.

Freshman Mike Kelchak pitched the first 6 1/3 innings to pick up his second win of the year. Charlie Reed got the final two outs for the Huskies.

In the opener, the Huskies jumped out to a 5-0 lead after the first two innings. With two outs, Martin and Zorger singled to put runners at first and second. Jeremy Arner then followed with an RBI single. Kelleher then doubled home Zorger to make it a 2-0 lead for Bloomsburg. The third run of the inning came home when Chris Husted singled in Arner.

The Huskies' second inning saw them add two more runs to go up 5-0. Martin had a sacrifice fly for one run batted in, while Zorger singled for another run batted in.

The Mountaineers, though, chipped away at the lead and trailed 5-3 heading into the bottom of the seventh when they erupted for three runs to rally for the win.

Bloomsburg, 13-13, 2-5 in the PSAC East, will play at home Tuesday with Millersville in a triple-header starting at 10:30 a.m.
