BLOOMSBURG-- The Bloomsburg University baseball team ended their season on a high note on Sunday, as they swept Mansfield in a doubleheader. The Huskies won game one 1-0, then took game two 3-1.
In the opener, Bloomsburg finally broke a scoreless tie in the fifth, when Carlos Medina (Lititz/Manheim Twp.) hit an RBI single that brought Matt Allen (Williamsport/South Williamsport) home. From there, starting pitcher Grant Kernaghan (Upper Darby/Upper Darby) took over, as he earned his first win of the season in dazzling fashion with a complete game, six-hit shutout of the Mountaineers.
In the nightcap, Bloomsburg got on the board in the first inning when Preston Hitchcock (Laceyville/Wyalusing) successfully stole home after leading off the inning with a walk. Mansfield would come back in the top half of the third with a run, but Bloomsburg responded with a run of their own in the bottom of the third as Hitchcock scored after leading off the inning with a double. The Huskies increased their lead to 3-1 in the fifth when Tony Donofry (Newtown/Council Rock North) hit a two-out, RBI single to score Hitchcock.
On the mound, the Bloomsburg pitching staff once again stymied the Mansfield offense. Jonathan Derkitis (Bethlehem/Bethlehem Catholic) earned his first win of the season after throwing a little over three innings of shutout ball in relief, while Chace Phillips (Milton/Milton) earned his first save of the season.
Before the game the Huskies honored the four senior members of its team, Rich Letts, Matt Allen, Paul Culbertson and Chace Phillips.
Bloomsburg finishes the 2008 season with a 15-32 overall record, 8-12 in the PSAC.
