MILLERSVILLE-Bloomsburg University dropped both games of a doubleheader to Millersville on Saturday, losing by scores of 2-1 and 4-3 in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East baseball action.
In the opener, neither team was able to get on the board until the bottom of the fourth when a single up the middle by Chris Edgar knocked in Ryan McCormick, giving the Marauders a 1-0 lead. The Huskies came right back in next inning, as a double by junior Joey Ianiero (Bloomsburg/Central Columbia) brought freshman Devin McLaughlin (Bloomsburg/Bloomsburg) all the way around from first base. The game would go to extra innings, as both starting pitchers shut down opposing batters.
After the lone Bloomsburg runner in the eighth was picked off at second, Millersville loaded the bases with a double, a hit-by-pitch and a bunt single. With no one out, Miles Gallagher's bunt scored Kent Gerdes from third, ending game one.
Senior Grant Kernaghan (Upper Darby/Upper Darby) picked up the loss, going 7.0 innings and giving up four hits and striking out 10 with just one earned run. The Marauders starter, Forrest Mengle, went 8.0 innings, giving up four hits and one unearned run.
In game two, both teams started the run-scoring early as the Huskies took an early 1-0 lead when senior Tony Donofry (Newtown/Council Rock North) knocked in Ianiero after a lead-off double. Millersville struck back in its half of the opening inning, getting three runs, including one off of a wild pitch and another from a throwing error.
The Marauders increased their lead to 4-1 the very next inning when Derek Kline knocked home McCormick on a single up the middle. The Huskies came back in their half of the fourth, as senior Chris Tressler (Lewistown/Lewistown) led off with a triple and then was brought home on a groundout by Donofry. They brought their deficit down to one the next inning, when after getting back-to-back hits from freshman Eric Ebert (Holland/Council Rock South) and junior Gino Wise (Mechanicsburg/Mechanicsburg), scored on a sacrifice bunt by senior Scott Kacelowicz (Orwigburg/Blue Mountain).
Bloomsburg would threaten with two outs in the top of the seventh and junior Ryan Nanni (Norristown/Penn Charter) on first. Tressler hit a fly ball that was dropped by the Millersville right fielder. Nanni, who was running, attempted to score but the throw from the outfield was cut off by the shortstop McCormick whose throw beat Nanni to the plate, ending the game.
Sophomore Vinny Voorhees (Lakaska/New Hope Solebury) nearly matched Kernaghan on the mound for the Huskies, going 6.0 innings and giving up two earned runs on four hits with four strikeouts. Ebert went 2-for-3 and Donofry went 1-for-3 with two RBI.
The Huskies (5-19, 1-7) come back to Bloomsburg to host Millersville in doubleheader action on Sunday.
