As the Bloomsburg men's soccer team prepares for the 2005 season coach Paul Payne is sure of just one thing; the Huskies will be younger and more diverse offensively than they were a year ago.

“We lost our top two players from a year ago in Adam Clay and Greg Pompei,” said Payne. “They were our impact players and handled the bulk of our scoring. But with both of them gone, I am not sure how good we will be. I do know the talent is there, we just need to grow and have some guys step out of the shadows and become leaders for us.”

OFFENSIVELY

The Huskies got the bulk of its scoring from Clay and Pompei, two All-PSAC performers last year. This year Bloomsburg will look to reach the back of the net with returning players such as Venus Cherry, Chris Tomarelli and Luke Haile. Also, newcomers Jared Ferreira and Jeff Natale have finishing ability and will be looked to for some added offense.

MIDFIELD

The Huskies will once again be solid in the middle getting good team soccer from a large group of players. What makes the group standout even more is their adaptability and the ability to play in multiple areas of the field.

Cherry will lead the way in the middle along with Adam Grady, Ryan Scafidi, Josh Prall, Bryan Darby and Trevor Dubensky. Look for newcomers Kyle Benner and Eric Moninghoff to add depth to the group.

DEFENSE

The defense has been a area of strength the last few seasons for the Huskies and this year will be no exception. Leading the way is junior Steve Feimster and with Tevor Kepner and Dan Beshore. Also, look for freshman Brian Farrell to make an impact.

GOALKEEPING

The question of who will man the goal is still unanswered. Pushing to earn the top spot will be freshmen Travis Young, Pat Becker and Andrew Hench, with newcomer John DeAngelis pushing to get a look.

OVERVIEW

“Our goal once again is to qualify for the PSAC playoffs,” said Payne. “After missing the playoffs a year ago we are using that as motivation for this year. The kids are really pumped up for what will be a very exciting season.

“As for the rest of the PSAC, I expect East Stroudsburg, Lock Haven, West Chester and California to all be strong,” Payne added. “We just need to be ready to play each and every game.”
