Bloomsburg Squeaks Past Cal (Pa.)

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – Bloomsburg women's soccer earned a 1-0 win in their first game of the year over California (Pa.) in the Lady Raider Classic at Shippensburg University Saturday night.

The non-conference match up of Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference rivals stood at a scoreless deadlock until the 79th minute when Bloomsburg's Katie Armitage (Saylorsburg/Stroudsburg) and Ashley Brucker (Blairstown, NJ/North Warren) broke free and found themselves two on one with Cal goalie Hanna Spiegle. Armitage passed to Brucker who tapped the ball into the back of the net for a game-winning goal and 1-0 victory.

Cal, who falls to 0-1 on the season, was out-shot 20-6 by the Lady Bears. Bloomsburg also held a slight 5-3 advantage on corner kicks.

Bloomsburg goalie Robin Gerber (Succasunna, NJ/Roxbury) earned the shutout victory and registered one save. For Cal, Spiegle made six saves while allowing just the one goal.

Both squads return to action in the Lady Raider Classic Sunday afternoon. Cal faces homestanding Shippensburg in the opener at 10 a.m., and Bloomsburg takes on Edinboro at 12:30 p.m. Both games will be held at the Robb Sports Complex at Shippensburg University.
