Huskies Fall to Top-Ranked Carson-Newman in Season Opener

Game Box Score

Game Play By Play

SEVIERVILLE, TN—Carson-Newman College, the top-ranked team in the country in many pre-season polls, escaped a scare Saturday night as it defeated Bloomsburg University, 28-20 in the Smokey Mountain Rotary Classic.

The Eagles were 13-1 a year ago, losing in the NCAA championship, 58-52, in four overtimes.

Bloomsburg opened the scoring on the first play of the second period when Eric Miller (Clarks Summit/Abington Heights) hit Brian Sullivan (Media/Penncrest) with a 34-yard touchdown pass. The pass completed a four-play, 92 yard scoring drive. On the drive tailback Arrastene Henry (Philadelphia/Geo. Washington) had runs on 16 and 13 yards on the first two plays, while Miller hit Mike Lelko (Phillipsburg, NJ/Phillipsburg) with a 29-yard pass to set up the touchdown. The extra point try went wide left leaving the Huskies with a 6-0 lead with 14:49 left in the first.

Carson-Newman grabbed the lead on a drive set up on an interception by safety Avery Blue. After turnover, the Eagles went 59 yards in six plays highlighted by a one yard run from Antwon Oliver with 9:06 to play in the first half to take a 7-6 lead.

In the third period, after a turnover deep in Bloomsburg territory, the Eagles wasted little time in extending their lead. After taking over at the 13 yard line, quarterback Leonard Guyton hit tight end with an eight yard scoring pass with 5:48 to play in the third. Another touchdown run made 21-6 early in the fourth period and Carson-Newman appeared to be running away with the game.

But, the Huskies began their comeback when Arrastene Henry dove in from two yards out with 11:43 left in the game making it 21-12. The Huskies then went for two with Lelko making a diving catch of a Miller pass to pull the Huskies to within seven points, 21-14.

After forcing the Eagles to punt, the Huskies put together another scoring drive. On a third down play from the Eagles' 35 yard line, Miller scampered for 14 yards to the Carson-Newman 21-yard line. Henry then ran on consecutive plays, the final eight for the score to get Bloomsburg within one at 21-20. But the Huskies again came up short in the kicking game with the extra point try going wide right.

After getting a good return on the ensuing kickoff, Carson-Newman ate up all but the final 1:50 of the game with Oliver going in from a yard out to ice the game. The extra point made the final 28-20.

The Huskies are idle next week before going on the road to visit Shippensburg University September 9 at
