Game Box Score

Play-by-Play not available for this game

BLOOMSBURG—Tierell Johnson (Harrisburg/C.D. East) caught eight passes for 151 yards and one score leading Bloomsburg University to a 35-28 win over Kutztown University Saturday afternoon. The win gives the Huskies (8-2, 6-0 PSAC) the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Eastern Division championship. The win was also the 100th in the coaching career of Bloomsburg head coach Danny Hale. Hale is now 100-39-1 in 13 years of coaching.

Kutztown took the early lead in the game when Rich Hamilton caught an eight-yard scoring pass from Mike deMarteliere with 8:10 to play in the first quarter. The drive, the first of the game for the Golden Bears, covered 80 yards in nine plays.

The Huskies tied the score at 7-7 when Marques Glaze (Robesonia/Conrad Weiser) scored on a 10-yard run with 2:54 left in the first half. Glaze would leave the game later in the first half with a slight concussion.

The Golden Bears reclaimed the lead at the 10:42 mark of the second period when deMarteleire hit Phil Washington with a 25-yard scoring pass to cap a seven-play, 62-yard drive.

On the ensuing drive Johnson caught a 31-yard scoring pass from Eric Miller (Clarks Summit/Abington Heights) bring the Huskies to within 14-13 with 8:43 remaining in the half. However, the extra point failed, after a high snap, leaving Kutztown with a one-point advantage.

Kutztown increased the lead to eight on their next series when deMarteleire connected with Vincent Jamison on a five-yard scoring pass to make it 21-13 with 5:01 left to play in the first half.

Bloomsburg, ranked first in the PSAC in total offense, pulled out some trickery in its next scoring drive. Defensive back Toyae Berry was inserted into the lineup at tailback, took a pitch from Miller, and connected with Johnson on a 50-yard completion. Two plays later Doug Werner (Sinking Spring/Conrad Weiser) went in from two yards out pulling Bloomsburg to within, 21-19. Miller then hit Mike Lelko (Phillipsburg/Phillipsburg, NJ) with a two-point conversion pass knotting the game at 21-21.

Kutztown had one final chance to score right before halftime, driving to the Bloomsburg eight yard line. But deMarteleire fumbled the ball after being hit by Jeremiah Dyer (Berwick/Berwick). The Huskies recovered with just seconds left on the clock keeping the game tied at 21-all.

Bloomsburg took its first lead of the game in the third period when Lelko caught a nine-yard scoring pass from Miller. The kick was blocked, though, and leaving the Huskies with a 27-21 lead with 6:58 left in the third.

The Huskies made it 35-21 later in the third when Miller went in from one-yard out, then hit Lelko with another conversion pass with 3:40 left in the third.

Kutztown rallied once more and needed less than a minute to score on a 62-yard pass from deMarteleire with 2:58 to play in the third.

Eric Miller became the Huskies all-time leader in passing yards during the game after completing a 21-yard throw to Lelko in the second period. Miller now has 7,337 passing yards, moving past Glen McNamee (1993-'96) for the school's all-time lead. He finished the game 17 of 24 for 254 yards and two scores.

Arrastene Henry (Philadelphia/Geo. Washington) led the Huskies rushing attack with 25 carries for 100 yards after taking over Glaze.

Defensively, Dyer led the Huskies with nine tackles, six of them solo and the one forced fumble.

Bloomsburg will visit Slippery Rock Saturday, Nov. 11 in the season finale.
