BLOOMSBURG—Quarterback Eric Miller (Clarks Summit/Abington Heights) threw four touchdown passes and Mike Lelko (Phillipsburg NJ/Phillipsburg) caught 10 passes for 160 yards and three scores leading Bloomsburg University to a 38-14 win over Northwood (MI) University in an NCAA Division II quarterfinal game.
The Huskies (11-2) will advance to the semifinals next week against the winner of UC-Davis and Mesa State. Bloomsburg has won 11 straight after opening the season with two losses. It is the Huskies first appearance in the national semifinals since 1985.
Bloomsburg got a 41-yard opening kickoff return from Byrant Stone (Norwich, CT/Worchester Acad.) giving the Huskies the ball at their 44-yard line. The Huskies then marched 56 yards in 13 plays with Marques Glaze (Robesonia/Conrad Weiser) going in from one yard out giving the home team a 7-0 lead.
The Timberwolves (10-2) answered with a 49-yard kickoff return from Pernell Jackson giving Northwood the ball at the Bloomsburg 49-yard line to start their first drive. Six plays later, Bryant Lawrence scored on a one-yard run knotting the game at 7-7.
Bloomsburg quickly regained the lead on its next possession moving 62 yards in six plays with Lelko catching a 21 yard pass from Miller making it 14-0.
After the Huskies forced a punt on the Timberwolves' next possession, Bloomsburg increased its lead to 21-7 when Lelko caught an 11-yard pass from Miller with 13:44 to play in the second period.
After a Northwood interception in the endzone stopped a Timberwolves' scoring drive, the Huskies moved 80 yards in eight plays with Lelko catching an 8-yard pass from Miller giving Bloomsburg a 28-7 lead with 6:52 to play in the half.
After a Northwood punt, the Huskies moved down field and got a career-long 36-yard field goal from Chris Thompson sending the Huskies to the locker room with a 31-7 lead.
After a scoreless third period, the Timberwolves got the longest play from scrimmage in their history when quarterback Jason Martin, backed up to the one-yard line on a punt, took the snap, rolled down the line to his right and then broke free into the Bloomsburg secondary. Being chased down from behind, he pitched the ball at the Timberwolves' 30 yard-line to Chad Coons who went the distance for the score making it 31-14.
Bloomsburg made it 38-14 on the ensuing drive when Tierell Johnson (Harrisburg/C.D. East) caught a 10-yard scoring pass from Miller with 9:08 to play capping an 11-play, 69 yard drive.
Miller finished the day, 23-35 for 274 yards and four scores. In two NCAA playoff games, Miller is 39-62 for 590 yards, nine touchdowns and no interceptions. Mike Lelko finished the day with 10 catches for 160 yards and three scores while Glaze gained 100 yards on 26 carries and scored once. Jeremiah Dyer (Berwick/Berwick) led the defense with nine tackles, seven solo.
Quarterback Jason Martin, who passed for 125 yards and rushed for 43 yards on the afternoon, led Northwood.
Overall, Bloomsburg, which scored on all five of its first half possession, gained 487 yards in total offense to 330 by Northwood.
