DAVIS, CA—Bloomsburg University scored 29 unanswered points in the fourth period to rally past UC Davis, 58-48, in an NCAA Division II semifinal playoff game. The Huskies (12-2) trailed 48-29 entering the final period of the game.
In the fourth period, Bloomsburg outgained the Aggies (12-1) 176 to 63 in total offense while producing touchdowns on four of its drives, the fifth coming as the Huskies ran out the clock.
The Huskies will now go on to face Delta State (MS), a winner over North Dakota State, in the NCAA Division II finals Saturday, December 9 in Florence, AL.
The Aggies opened the scoring on the first drive of the game. After Bloomsburg won the toss and deferred, the Aggies started with the ball on their own 32-yard line. After a running play and a pass play netted no yards for UC Davis, quarterback J.T. O'Sullivan hit Charley Enos with a 53-yard pass and run down to the Bloomsburg 15-yard line. Two plays later, Matt Brown went in from four yards out giving the Aggies a 7-0 lead after the extra point.
Bloomsburg responded on its first drive of the game using a time-consuming 14-play, 80-yard drive. Marques Glaze was the workhorse for the Huskies on the drive carrying the ball eight times for 50 yards. Arrastene Henry carried the ball the final 12 yards for the score taking the handoff and breaking outside and going untouched into the endzone. The PAT by Chris Thompson tied the game at 7-7 with 7:04 to play in the first period.
The Aggies wasted little time regaining the lead moving 62 yards in 10 plays. O'Sullivan was 3-5 on the drive for 33 yards hitting Enos with a three-yard pass in the corner of the endzone for the score giving the Aggies a 14-7 lead after the point after.
Bloomsburg's Bryant Stone returned the ensuing kickoff to the Huskies' 40-yard line setting up yet another scoring drive. Glaze opened the drive with a 15-yard gain to the Aggie 45. After a Miller to Brian Sullivan pass netted 11 yards to the Davis 34-yard line, the next three plays netted no yards setting up a fourth and 10 for the Huskies at the Aggies 34-yard line. Miller then connected with Rocco Forgione with a 10-yard pass keeping the drive alive. Miller then hit Mike Lelko with a 20-yard scoring pass making it 14-13. Davis then blocked the extra point attempt leaving the Aggies with a 14-13 lead.
O'Sullivan, showing why he was one of the eight finalists for the Harlon Hill Award, moved the Aggies for another score in eight plays, needing just over three minutes of time. Facing a second and 27 from his own 43 yard line, O'Sullivan hit Matt Brown with a seven yard pass to midfield setting up a third and 20. O'Sullivan then found Enos with 30-yard pass to the Bloomsburg 20-yard line. Three plays later O'Sullivan hit tight end Chris Smith with a seven yard scoring pass making it 21-13 after the extra point.
Bloomsburg looked like it would be forced to punt for the first time facing a third and five from its own 29 when Miller threw a shovel pass to Glaze who went 62 yards to the Aggies' 10 yard line. Three plays netted three yards for the Huskies who settled for a 24-yard field goal from Chris Thompson making it 21-16.
The Aggies made it 28-16 when Kelsey Gallagher went in from one-yard out capping a nine-play, 48-yard drive. Matt Brown was the workhorse for the Aggies carrying the ball six times and catching one pass.
The offensive show by both teams then took a break as the Huskies suffered their first turnover of the game when Miller's pass went off the hands of Allen Lechthaler and into the hands of Tom Watts of UC Davis who returned the ball to the 25-yard line. After a personsal foul on the Aggies, O'Sullivan was intercepted by Trent Flick.
Bloomsburg then went three and out giving the Aggies the ball on the Huskies' 26-yard line after a long return. After the Aggies were stopped their 40-yard field goal try was short giving Bloomsburg the ball at its own 23-yard line. On a second and 8 play, Miller hit little-used Darryl Williams with a 75-yard scoring pass. The extra point was blocked again.
An on-side kick attempt by the Huskies failed with the Aggies recovering the ball at midfield. Five plays later O'Sullivan hit Michael Oliva with a four-yard pass making it 35-22 with 48 seconds remaining in the first half.
Bloomsburg moved downfield with the help of a 44-yard run by Darryl Williams, his first carry of the year giving the Huskies the ball at the Aggies 11-yard line with eight seconds left in the half. A pass to the endzone for Lelko was too long forcing the Huskies to settle for a field goal attempt from Chris Thompson. But, for the third time in the game, UC Davis blocked the kick as the half ended.
In the opening 30 minutes of play, the two teams combined for 671 yards of total offense, while punting just once.
The second half started slowly for both teams with both teams forced to punt on their first possessions.
Bloomsburg scored on its second possession with the help of a 30-yard run from Glaze who ran it to the Aggies 15-yard line. Two plays later Miller hit Tierell Johnson with an 11-yard pass to the corner of the endzone. The extra point by Thompson was good bringing the Huskies to within 35-29 with 9:57 to play in the third.
The Huskies wasted an excellent scoring opportunity on its next possession. After intercepting O'Sullivan in Aggie territory, Bloomsburg marched to the 10-yard line before Aaron Latzke intercepted Miller's pass at the six-yard line ending the threat.
The Aggies increased their lead after another good play by their special teams. Blocking a Bloomsburg punt gave the Huskies 25-yard line. After a holding penalty pushed the back to the Aggies' 31-yard line, O'Sullivan scrambled 30-yards to the one-yard line. Matt Brown then scored on the next play making it 42-29 with the extra point with 3:24 to play in the period.
Bloomsburg looked like it was on the move when disaster struck. Miller, on a third down play, was sacked by Kris Spracker and fumbled the ball while going down. The Aggies' Justin Patterson recovered and ran 67-yards for a score making it 48-29 after the missed extra point try.
Bloomsburg pulled to within 48-36 when the Huskies marched 67 yards in 11 plays with Miller connecting with Lelko on a one-yard pass with 12:38 to play.
After forcing an Aggie punt, Bloomsburg marched 65 yards in eight plays with Darryl Williams taking a handoff and going 18 yards for the touchdown. Chris Thompson's extra point brought the Huskies' to within 48-43.
Bloomsburg's defense forced a punt with the Huskies taking over at their own 37-yard line. Five plays later Miller hit Johnson with a 15-yard scoring pass. Going for two, Miller hit Lelko with a diving pass in the corner of the endzone giving Bloomsburg a 51-48 lead.
The Huskies defense then came up with a fumble recovery by Brian Sims giving Bloomsburg the ball deep in Aggie territory. Marques Glaze then ran 19-yards for score giving Bloomsburg a 58-48 lead with 1:50 to play.
UC Davis had one last gasp, but, after driving to the Bloomsburg 19-yard line, O'Sullivan was intercepted for the third time in the game with Luke Murray making the play.
Bloomsburg then gained a first down and ran out the clock to cap the most improbable win in school history.
There were many heroes for the Huskies with Miller going 23-43 for 385 yards and five touchdowns and interceptions. Glaze rushed for 184 yards on 31 carries and had one touchdown, while Johnson caught eight passes for 123 yards and two scores. Williams, who had no rushes during the previous 13 weeks, carried twice for 62 yards and one score and also made two catches for 89 yards and one score.
O'Sullivan finished 22-36 for 285 yards and three scores, while Enos caught eight passes for 141 yards and one score.
Defensively, Matt Keys made seven tackles while Kevin Petri added six and one forced fumble.
