BLOOMSBURG—Tailback Marques Glaze (Robesonia/Conrad Weiser) rushed for 168 yards and scored one touchdown to lead Bloomsburg University to a 35-7 win over West Chester Saturday night.
The Huskies improve to 3-2, 2-0 in the PSAC East, while the Golden Rams fall to 0-5, 0-2 in the PSAC East. Quarterback Eric Miller (Clarks Summit/Abington Heights) also tied the Bloomsburg record for career touchdown passes in the game.
Bloomsburg got on the board first when Glaze, getting his first start of the season, capped a nine-play,
61- yard drive with a nine yard run with 11:21 left in the first. The PAT failed leaving the Huskies with a 6-0 lead.
The Golden Rams took the lead later in the first period when DeFlippo threw an 18-yard touchdown pass on a halfback option to cap a 12-play, 59-yard drive. With the point after kick, the Golden Rams grabbed a 7-6 lead. The touchdown also snapped a 160-minute scoreless streak West Chester.
Bloomsburg had an opportunity to take the lead in the second period, but West Chester blocked a 33-yard field goal attempt.
In the second half it was all Bloomsburg as the Huskies scored on their first four possessions of the half to pull away.
A key play in the game for the Huskies occurred on their first drive of the second half. On fourth and one from the Bloomsburg 27-yard line, Miller was able to pickup a first down on a quarterback sneak and keep the drive going. Two plays later, Miller hit Tierell Johnson (Harrisburg/C.D. East) with a 66-yard completion to the West Chester one-yard line. Miller then scored on the next play and with a two-point conversion the Huskies led 14-7.
On the Golden Rams' next possession, the Huskies' Toyae Berry (Easton/Easton) intercepted a pass setting up a Miller to Johnson 39-yard scoring pass giving Bloomsburg a 21-7 lead. On the Huskies' third possession of the half, Miller hit wide receiver Mike Lelko (Phillipsburg, NJ/Phillipsburg) on a 50-yard scoring pass. The touchdown pass was the 57th of Miller's career, tying him with Glenn McNamee for the all-time lead at Bloomsburg.
The Huskies' final score of the game came after a fumble by the Golden Rams deep in their own territory. Doug Werner (Sinking Spring/Conrad Weiser) then capped a five-play drive with a one-yard plunge giving the Huskies the win.
Miller finished the day 11 of 17 for 233 yards and two scores. Johnson caught 3 passes for 114 yards and one score, while Lelko had four catches for 78 yards.
Defensively, the Huskies limited the Golden Rams to just 161 yards of total offense. Linebacker Jeremiah Dyer (Berwick/Berwick) led the team with 10 tackles. Greg Roskos (Scranton/West Scranton) added seven tackles, six of them solo, for Bloomsburg. The Huskies host Indiana (PA) Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
