BLOOMSBURG—The Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) announced the All-PSAC first and second team as well as the Offensive, Defensive, Rookie and Coach of the Year earlier today. When all the votes were tallied, the Bloomsburg University football program garnered 18 honors.
The Huskies finished the regular season with a record of 9-1, including a 6-0 mark in the PSAC East, which helped the team claim its second consecutive PSAC Eastern Division Championship. Bloomsburg received a number four seed in the NCAA Division II playoffs, where the Huskies will open up play against number one seed Grand Valley State (MI) on the road this Saturday at 1 p.m.
In addition to the 10 first team and six second team All-PSAC East selections, Bloomsburg can also lay claim to the Offensive Player and Coach of the Year honors.
Marques Glaze (Robesonia/Conrad Weiser) secured the Offensive Player of the Year award after rushing for 1,327 yards and 12 touchdowns on 211 carries as the primary running back in the Huskies' rushing attack. Glaze, a senior co-captain, also claimed first team All-PSAC East honors for the second straight season after averaging 6.3 yards per carry and 132.7 yards per game. He also caught five passes for 79 yards and has made one tackle while regularly playing on the punt coverage team.
Glaze is a Northeast Regional Finalist for the Harlon Hill Trophy, given to the best player in NCAA Division II football. Earlier this season, Glaze received PSAC East Offensive Player of the Week honors after he rushed for a career-high 222 yards and scored four touchdowns against rival East Stroudsburg. Glaze is third all-time at Bloomsburg in rushing with 3,331 yards.
Head Coach Danny Hale was named the PSAC Coach of the Year for the second consecutive year and eighth time overall. Hale has led the Huskies to the NCAA Division II playoffs two years in a row for the first time in school history. He has compiled a record of 73-28-1 in nine seasons at the helm for Bloomsburg and an overall record of 113-41-1 in 14 seasons as a Division II head coach. The 73 wins at Bloomsburg is a school record.
Hale has been named the American Football Coaches' Association (AFCA) District Coach of the Year six times, AFCA Regional Coach of the Year twice and the AFCA National Coach of the Year one time (2000).
Senior quarterback Chris Thompson (Manheim/Manheim Central) was named first team All-PSAC East for his efforts in leading the Huskies this season. Thompson, in his first year as a starter, completed 110 passes in 206 attempts for 1,650 yards and 21 touchdowns. Thompson completed 53.4 percent of his passes and threw just seven interceptions for a passing efficiency rating of 147.52. Thompson averaged 165 yards passing per game to help him claim the honor.
Wide receiver Tierell Johnson (Harrisburg/Central Dauphin East) was named to the first team after making a team-high 43 receptions for 758 yards and 12 touchdowns. The junior was named All-PSAC East second team after his breakout season of a year ago.
This year, Johnson averaged 17.6 yards per catch and 75.8 yards per game. He caught a career-long 79-yard touchdown pass in a win against Cheyney. Johnson caught three touchdown passes in a victory over Mansfield earlier this season.
Tight end Allen Lechthaler (Hershey/Hershey) was named to the first team All-PSAC East for the first time after making 19 receptions for 244 yards and one touchdown. The senior averaged 12.8 yards per catch and 24.4 yards per game on the year. Lechthaler caught a career-high five passes twice this season, against West Chester and Millersville. Lechthaler also provided strong blocking for both Glaze and Thompson throughout the season.
Three offensive linemen received either first of second team honors for the Huskies. Sophomore guard Chris Mullin (Plymouth Meeting/Wissahickon) and junior tackle Brian Bingaman (Northumberland/Shikellamy) claimed first team honors, while junior guard Charlie Fay (Falls Church, VA/George Mason) earned second team honors. Mullin was a member of the PSAC East second team last season.
The trio were primarily responsible for the team's offensive success this season, helping the running attack gain 240.6 yards and the passing game gain 171.6 yards per game. The three linemen helped to allow just 14 sacks on the year, an average of only 1.4 per contest.
On defense, senior defensive linemen Fran Gregor (Downingtown/Downingtown) and Kevin Petri (Coplay/Parkland) both earned first team honors for the first time.
On the season, Gregor recorded 30 tackles, including a team-high 10 for a loss of yardage. Gregor also made a team-high five sacks, while deflecting one pass and blocking one kick on the year.
Petri made 19 tackles, 11 of them unassisted, on the season. He also made seven tackles for a loss of yardage and recorded 4.5 sacks on the year.
Senior co-captain Jeremiah Dyer (Berwick/Berwick) earned All-PSAC East first team honors at the linebacker position for the second season in a row after leading the team in tackles with 97. Dyer made four tackles for a loss and recorded 0.5 of a sack on the year. Dyer broke up four passes, recovered one fumble and forced another fumble to help earn him the honor. He recorded a team-high 12 tackles in an early season win over Shippensburg. Dyer was also named All-PSAC East second team as a sophomore in 1999.
Senior defensive back Toyae Berry (Easton/Easton) was named first team All-PSAC East for the second consecutive year after being tied for the team lead in interceptions with three and leading all defensive backs in tackles with 37, including three for a loss of yardage. Berry returned his interceptions for a total of 37 yards and one touchdown, while also breaking up four passes and recovering one fumble.
Berry also was the primary punt returner for the team, making 26 returns for 234 yards. He averaged 9.0 yards per return and had a season-long return of 37 yards.
Senior defensive lineman Mike Bolinsky (Collegeville/Perkiomen Valley) earned second team All-PSAC East honors after he led all defensive linemen in tackles with 34. Eight of those tackles were for a loss of yards. Bolinsky made four sacks and deflected one pass en route to his first post-season award.
Zach Miers (Alpha, NJ/Phillipsburg), a junior defensive lineman, made 29 tackles, 14 unassisted and three for a loss of yards, on his way to earning second team All-PSAC East honors.
Senior linebacker Greg Roskos (Scranton/West Scranton) earned his second, second team All-PSAC East honor after finishing second on the team in tackles with 62, 34 unassisted and nine for a loss of yardage. His nine tackles for a loss are second best on the squad. Roskos added 2.5 sacks and forced three fumbles on the year. He also deflected one pass on the season.
Junior defensive back Rudy Garcia (Harrisburg/Central Dauphin) earned second team All-PSAC East honors for the second straight year. Garcia made 36 tackles, second among defensive backs, with one of those tackles made for a loss of yards. Garcia tied for the team-lead with three interceptions and broke up eight passes on the year.
Bryant Stone (Norwich/Norwich Academy) earned second team All-PSAC East honors as the return specialist. Stone, a sophomore, was the primary kick returner for the Huskies, returning 14 kicks for a total of 432 yards, an average of 30.9 yards per return. Stone returned one kick for a touchdown and had a season-long return of 93 yards. Stone also returned five punts for a total of 21 yards.
Stone also plays defense as a defensive back where he made 33 tackles, six for a loss of yardage. He also recorded four sacks and made two interceptions on the year. He also has nine pass break ups and one fumble recovery on the year.
