BLOOMSBURG—Wide Receiver Tierell Johnson (Harrisburg/C.D. East) caught two touchdown passes and Marques Glaze(Robesonia/Conrad Weiser) rushed for two more as Bloomsburg University, which scored on its first three possessions of the game, went on to beat Cheyney University, 46-0, Saturday afternoon. Bloomsburg (3-0, 1-0 PSAC East) has now won 15 of its last 16 games dating back to last year.
Johnson got the Huskies on the board on their first offensive play of the game. Taking over at the Cheyney 49-yard line after a short punt, quarterback Chris Thompson (Manheim/Manheim Central) hit Johnson in stride for a 51-yard scoring strike to give Bloomsburg a 7-0 lead after the extra point by Zach Quigley (Lansdale/Methacton).
The Huskies second score of the day came after a seven play, 63-yard drive with Glaze going the final 11 yards to give Bloomsburg a 14-0 lead. Two big plays on the drive were a 24-yard gain by Glaze and a 16-yard run by fullback Jamison McLaughlin (Petersburg, VA/Petersburg).
Bloomsburg added to its lead with a score on its third possession of the first period. Again it was the connection of Thompson to Johnson, which did the damage for the Huskies. On a second down play, Thompson rolled out and hit Johnson, who again outraced the defense to the end zone for a 79-yard score to give the Huskies a 20-0 after the missed extra point.
The second period was scoreless for both teams with Bloomsburg coughing up the ball three times in the period. Cheyney's best chance to score in the first half came when it recovered a fumble at the Huskies' 29-yard line. However, after a sack on first down, the Wolves eventually turned the ball over on downs after gaining just four yards in the series.
In the third period the Huskies added to their lead with Arrastene Henry (Philadelphia/Geo. Washington) capping an eight play, 75-yard drive with a nine-yard run. The extra point failed leaving the Huskies with a 26-0 lead.
On the ensuing drive, Luke Murray (Milton/Milton) intercepted a Cheyney pass at the Huskies 49-yard line. nine plays later Glaze scored for the second time in the game, this time from one yard out, to give the Huskies a 33-0 lead after the extra point by freshman kicker Tim Oliver (Mountaintop/Crestwood).
The Huskies tacked on two more scores in the fourth period with both coming from red-shirt freshmen getting their first touchdowns. On the first play of the fourth period, Mike Ceroli (Medford, N/Lenape) scored on a four-yard run, while with 1:47 to play, Sid Harrison (Palymra/Palymra) capped off a drive with a three-yard plunge.
Overall, the Huskies gained 561 yards in total offense to 152 for the Wolves. Johnson finished with five catches for 169 yards and two scores, while Glaze picked up 156 yards rushing on 22 carries. Thompson ended the day 8-14 for 213 yards and two scores.
On defense, Jeremiah Dyer (Berwick/Berwick) led the Huskies with seven tackles, while Matt Keys (West Fairview/East Pennsboro) and Charlie Lanier (Tobyhanna/Pocono Mountain) each added five.
