ALLENDALE, MI—Tailback Reggie Spearmon rushed for three touchdowns to lead Grand Valley State to a 42-14 win over Bloomsburg University in a first round NCAA Division II First Round Game. Grand Valley (11-0) will face fellow conference member Saginaw Valley in a second round game next week. Bloomsburg ends its season at 9-2.
The Lakers took the opening kickoff and quickly moved into Bloomsburg territory. With the ball at the Huskies 26-yard line and facing a third and 11, Anes threw a screen pass picking up 15 yards to the Bloomsburg 11-yard line. Anes, after being sacked on a first down play, ran a quarterback draw down to the Huskies 2-yard line. After a run gained no yards, Anes threw for Dave Kircus in the end zone with Kircus getting called for offensive pass interference pushing the ball back to the 18-yard line. The field goal try by Kevin Sonntag from 35-yards failed giving the ball to the Huskies on their own 20.
On the Huskies first play, Grand Valley was called for holding giving the Huskies a first down out to the 30-yard line. The Huskies moved the ball out to the 38-yard line but were forced to punt.
Grand Valley took over at its own 33-yard line and picked up a first down out the Bloomsburg 42-yard line when Anes hit Kircus for a big gain. Grand Valley faced a second third down situation but came up short on the second one forcing Grand Valley to try a 41-yard field goal, which came up short.
While the Grand Valley offense could not score, the defense did make a play to get the Lakers' on the board. Corner back Darren Smith intercepted a Chris Thompson pass and returned it 35-yards to put Grand Valley up 7-0 with 328 left in the first. On the play, the pass was intended for Darryl Williams who fell down setting up Smith for an easy return.
Williams set the Huskies up with a 35-yard kickoff return to the Bloomsburg 41-yard line. On the first play, Glaze picked up 11 yards before Thompson came back and hit Rocco Forgione with a long gainer down to the Laker 18-yard line. On a third down and 10-play, Thompson then hit Williams with an 18-yard scoring pass to tie the game at 7-7 after Tim Oliver's point after with 1:52 left in the first to cap a five play, 57-yard drive.
The Lakers, in the ensuing drive, moved the ball to the Huskies 10-yard line. A big play in the drive was a pass from Anes to Tyrone Hibler for 13-yards giving the Lakers first and goal. On the first play of the second period Anes then hit Kircus on a crossing pattern for a score. The point after gave the Lakers a 14-7 lead with 14:56 left in the second.
On the Huskies next drive Thompson missed on a third and five from the Bloomsburg 35-yard line forcing a punt. Joe Dietrich's 38-yard punt was returned 38-yards by Kircus giving the Lakers' good field position at the Bloomsburg 35-yard line. On a third and three from the 29-yard line, Anes then scrambled out of the pocket and raced to toward the end zone, diving for the score. The point after made the score 21-7 Grand Valley with 11:27 left in the second period.
Midway through the second period Anes hit Kircus with a pass, which the record-setting receiver took to the Bloomsburg 5-yard line. Two plays later Reggie Spearmon punched the ball in from one-yard out to make it 28-7 with 8:02 left in the second.
Bloomsburg's next drive looked like it would result in another punt, but for the second straight week the Huskies ran a fake with Jamison McLaughlin picking up a first down. Then on a third and long, Thompson hit Johnson for an 18-yard gain to midfield. A pass interference call moved the ball to the Lakers 35-yard line before the Huskies faced another third and long. A screen pass to Glaze picked up 11 yards giving the Huskies a first and 10 at the Grand Valley 22-yard line. Another holding call on Grand Valley set the Huskies up at the Lakers' 12-yard line. A screen pass to Glaze picked up 11 yards to the one-yard line. On second down Glaze was stopped short of the goal, but a holding call pushed Bloomsburg back to the 11-yard line. Thompson then hit Forgione with an 11-yard scoring pass to make it 28-14 with 57 seconds left in the half.
A key play occurred on Grand Valley's last drive of the half when star quarterback Curt Anes had to be carted of the field with a severe leg injury leaving the team in the hands of a red-shirt freshman Todd Wojciechowski.
In third period the Huskies failed to take advantage of an interception by Toyae Berry who returned the ball to the Lakers' 41-yard line. After moving to the 31-yard line, the Huskies were eventually forced to punt. The kick went into the end zone giving GVSU the ball at its own 20-yard line.
Moving to the Bloomsburg 40 and faced a third and short, Wojciechowski hit a wide-open Kircus with a pass play down to the two-yard line. Two plays later Spearmon bulled his way into the end zone for a touchdown. The point after made it 35-14 with 3:01 left in the third period.
Another holding call on the kickoff forced the Huskies to start their next drive their own 15-yard line. Two rushing plays moved it out to the 27 before three plays resulted in the Huskies to punt. However, a bad snap back to Joe Deitrich resulted in a big loss giving GVSU the ball at the Bloomsburg 14 yard line. Three plays later Spearmon scored his third touchdown of the day to make it 41-14 after the extra point with 55 seconds left in the third period.
The Grand Valley offense finally stopped and forced to punt with 11 minutes to play in the game. Darryl Williams came through and blocked the kick giving the ball to the Huskies at the one-yard line. However, on the first play the Huskies fumbled the ball into the end zone with Grand Valley recovering for a touchback keeping Bloomsburg scoreless in the second half.
For the game the Huskies, ranked first in the conference in total offense, finished the day with 255 yards of total offense. Thompson ended 19-3 for 214 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. Glaze finished with 62 yards rushing on 18 carries, while Forgione had seven catches for 107 yards.
