MILLERSVILLE--Quarterback Chris Thompson (Manheim/Manheim Central) passed for four touchdowns for the second straight week and the Bloomsburg University defense shutout Millersville in the second half as the Huskies rolled to a 42-13 win over the Marauders Saturday afternoon.
The win improves to the Huskies to 7-1 overall, 5-0 in the PSAC East, while Millersville falls to 2-7, 2-4 in the PSAC East.
Bloomsburg scored first in the game with Thompson connected with Rocco Forgione (Jessup/Valley View) on a 16-yard scoring strike. The point after by Tim Oliver (Mountaintop/Crestwood) was good giving the Huskies a 7-0 lead with 5:26 left in the first period. On the drive tailback Marques Glaze (Robesonia/Conrad Weiser) went over the 1,000-yard mark for the season and the 3,000-yard mark for his career.
Millersville trimmed the deficit to 7-3 on a 33-yard field goal by Sean Hughes with 9:17 left in the second period. On the ensuing kickoff, Julius Brown (New Holland/Garden Spot) returned the ball 33-yards to midfield. Four plays later Doug Werner (Sinking Spring/Conrad Weiser) scored from six yards out giving the Huskies a 14-3 lead after Oliver's extra point. The big play on the drive was a 25-yard run by Glaze giving the Huskies the ball at the Marauders 20-yard line.
The Marauders scored on the next possession of the game, taking advantage of a penalty to get their only touchdown of the day. On a fourth and seven play from the Bloomsburg 38-yard line, the Huskies were called for running into the kicker, a five-yard penalty. Faced with a fourt- and-two situation, the Marauders elected to go for it and got not only the first down, but also a touchdown. Running back Craig Austin took a pitch and rambled 33-yartds to cut the margin to 14-10 with 5:03 left in the half.
On the ensuing kickoff the Huskies again took advantage of some great special teams play with Bryant Stone (Norwich/Norwich Acad.) returning the ball 47-yards to the Millersville 48 yard line. Six plays later Thompson hit Forgione with an eight-yard scoring pass to make it 21-10 Bloomsburg with 2:33 left in the half.
After Bloomsburg forced Millersville to punt, Thompson was intercepted with the ball being returned to near midfield. Four plays later Hughes hit his second field goal of the game as time expired in the half leaving the Huskies with an eight point halftime lead of 21-13.
Bloomsburg wasted little time to score at the start of the second half. Starting the drive on their own 32-yard line, five running plays and one pass play moved the ball to the Marauders 32-yard line. Thompson then drifted back and hit a wide-open Tierell Johnson (Harrisburg/C.D. East) with a 32-yard scoring strike to make it 27-13 after the extra point failed.
Later in the third period it appeared as if the Marauders were going to punch the ball in for a score, but on a second goal from the Bloomsburg five-yard line the Millersville quarterback was sacked by Greg Roskos (Scranton/West Scranton) for a loss of 15 yards back to the 20. On the next play Toyae Berry (Easton/Easton) intercepted in the end zone ending the threat.
In the fourth period the Huskies put together a 65-yard scoring drive capped off by Thompson finding Johnson open for a 30-yard touchdown giving the Huskies a 35-13 lead after Forgione hit Allen Lecthaler (Hershey/Hershey) with a two-point conversion pass with 12:24 left in the game.
The Huskies capped the scoring for the day when Julius Brown rushed 19-yards for a score and Oliver converted the extra point giving Bloomsburg a 42-13 win.
Thompson finished the day 11-22 for 179 yards and four touchdowns, while Forgione caught five passes for 61 yards and two scores and Johnson five passes for 96 yards and two scores. Glaze ended the day with 22 carries for 173 yards as the Huskies totaled 447 yards of total offense.
Defensively Jeremiah Dyer (Berwick/Berwick) led the Huskies with 13 tackles, seven of them solo, while Rudy Marciano (Taylor/Riverside) added a career-high 10 tackles.
