BLOOMSBURG—Quarterback Chris Thompson threw for 160 yards and three touchdowns to lead Bloomsburg University to a season-opening 29-18 win over Shippensburg University Saturday afternoon.
Thompson, the Huskies' new starting quarterback, connected on touchdown throws of 21, 17 and six yards. A senior, Thompson was starting his first game since his sophomore year after being a backup his first three seasons.
Shippensburg, 0-2, got on the board first with 6:27 left when Jim Buffington connected with Brian Booker on a 10-yard scoring pass. The PAT was wide leaving the Red Raiders with a 6-0 lead.
Bloomsburg, 1-0, got on the board with 12:51 left in the second period on a 21-yard pass from Thompson to Rocco Forgione. Zach Quigley connected on the PAT giving Bloomsburg a 7-6 lead.
Shippensburg scored back-to back touchdowns to take an 18-7 lead later in the period. Sean Baker scored on a 39-yard toss from Buffington to cap a six-play, 84-yard drive with 7:22 left in the half. Then Jarrod Dech caught a 28-yard pass from Buffington with 3:26 left to give the Red Raiders a 12-point lead.
On the ensuing kickoff following Dech's touchdown, the Huskies' Bryant Stone ran the ball back 93 yards for a score, and with the two-point conversion, closed the gap to 18-15. The kickoff return for a touchdown was the second of Bryant's career.
The with less than a minute to play before halftime, the Huskies' defense came up big with Matt Keys making an interception and returning it to the Shippensburg 29-yard line. Two plays later Thompson hit Tierell “Taj” Johnson with a 17-yard pass to give Bloomsburg the lead at 22-18 after the extra point.
Bloomsburg sealed the game with less than two minutes to play after Charlie Lanier intercepted Buffington and returned the ball to Shippensburg 37-yard line. Five plays later Thompson hit Johnson with a six-yard pass on a fourth and goal play to make the final 29-18.
Johnson finished five catches for 63 yards and two scores, while Thompson was 12-21 for 160 yards, three touchdowns and one interception. On the ground, Marques Glaze gained 124 yards on 28 carries. Defensively, Bloomsburg held the Red Raiders to just 78 yards of offense in the second half. Jeremiah Dyer led the team with 12 tackles.
Buffington was 16-30 for 184 yards, three scores and two interceptions. John Andrews led the Red Raiders defense with 12 tackles.
