Bloomsburg Routs Slippery Rock to Finish 9-1; NCAA Playoffs Up Next

BLOOMSBURG—Quarterback Chris Thompson threw for three touchdowns and backup tailback Julius Brown scored three times to lead Bloomsburg University to a 42-14 win over Slippery Rock University Saturday afternoon.

Bloomsburg (9-1), ranked fourth in the last regional poll, will qualify for the NCAA Division II championships for the second straight year and fourth time in school history. The bids to the championships will be announced Sunday.

The Huskies opened the scoring when Toyae Berry intercepted a Kevin Dvorchak pass and returned it 37 yards for a score on the opening series of the game. The Huskies stretched their lead to 14-0 later in the first when Thompson threw 16-yards to Tierell Johnson for the first of his three touchdown passes.

Slippery Rock (6-4) cut the lead later in the first when Dorrian Glenn capped a 12-play, 71-yard drive with a three-yard touchdown run.

Bloomsburg increased its lead to 21-7 on Thompson's 29-yard pass to Darryl Williams with 11:20 left in the first. On the ensuing drive Slippery Rock drove to the Huskies one-yard line, but were denied twice and turned the ball over on downs.

In the third period the Huskies got a pair of rushing touchdowns from Brown, the Huskies' third-string tailback. Brown scored on runs of one- and two-yards to put Bloomsburg up 35-7.

Slippery Rock trimmed the margin to 35-14 when Brandon Markus broke several tackles on his way to a 27-yard touchdown run with 1:49 left in the third.

Brown finished off the scoring for Bloomsburg when he took a shovel pass from Thompson and eluded several tacklers before reaching the endzone.

Thompson finished the day 12-24 for 147 yards and three scores, while Brown rushed nine times for 43 yards and two scores. He finished with one reception for 17 yards and a touchdown. Arrastene Henry led the Huskies ground attack with 20 carries for 105 yards. Defensively, Jeremiah Dyer made a game-high 13 tackles.

For Slippery Rock, Markus rushed eight times for 72 yards and one score.
