Julius Brown Rushes for Career High in Bloomsburg Win

Game Stats, Play By Play

BLOOMSBURG—Tailback Julius Brown (New Holland/Garden Spot) rushed for a career-high 169 yards and scored once to lead Bloomsburg University to a 31-21 win over Kutztown University Saturday afternoon.

Kutztown (2-5) got on the board early when Rob Flowers hit Trevor Smith with a 7-yard pass to cap off an eight-play, 34-yard drive. After a failed PAT attempt, the Golden Bears held a 6-0 lead.

The Huskies answered with a score of their own on the ensuing drive. Senior quarterback Andrew Herrmann (Brookside, NJ/Mendham) led Bloomsburg downfield on an 11-play, 64-yard drive, finishing off with a 9-yard run on a quarterback keeper to put the Huskies ahead 7-6 after the PAT.

The lead wouldn't last long, however, as the Golden Bears marched downfield for another score on the next possession. Stephen Gammage had a 1-yard touchdown run and also scored on the two-point conversion to put Kutztown ahead 14-0.

The Huskies evened the score at 14-14 on the next drive with the first of Jameson McLaughlin's (Petersburg, VA/Petersburg) two touchdowns on the day. Brown rushed for 40-yards on the 9-play, 64-yard drive.

After forcing a Kutztown punt, the Huskies quickly took the lead. Jameson McLaughlin scored from 3 yards out to put Bloomsburg ahead 21-14 after the PAT. The score was set up by a 44-yard pass from Herrmann to Rocco Forgione (Peckville/Valley View).

Bloomsburg forced another Kutztown punt and drove the ball 73 yards down the field, including two passes to Tierell Johnson (Harrisburg/Central Dauphin) for 39-yards. Tim Oliver (Mountaintop/ Crestwood) hit a 19-yard field goal to increase the Husky lead to 24-14 with 1:06 left in the half.

Kutztown took just 48 seconds to score on Flowers' second touchdown pass to Smith, to cut the halftime lead to 24-21.

The second half proved to be a defensive battle, with neither team scoring in the third quarter. The Huskies added to their lead at the beginning of the fourth quarter. Brown rushed for 41-yards on the 6-play, 55-yard drive, finishing off with a 4-yard touchdown run putting the Huskies ahead 31-21 after the kick by Oliver.

Bloomsburg had a couple of good second-half scoring opportunities, but Herrmann was intercepted once at the Kutztown 3-yard line and once in the end zone.

The Huskies dominated play gaining 422 yards to Kutztown's 253 yards.

Herrmann completed 12 of 24 passes for 175 yards. Johnson caught six passes for 85 yards to lead the Husky receivers. Defensively for Bloomsburg, Matt Keys (West Fairview/East Pennsboro) and Shawn Butler (Newtown/Council Rock) each had seven tackles. Keys also added a sack. Jason Noble (Hershey/Milton Hershey) finished with five tackles, an interception, and a pass deflection.

For Kutztown, Rob Flowers was 13 of 29 for 137 yards and two scores. Defensively, Corey Benson led the Golden Bears with 11 tackles.
