Huskies Rally For Win over Shippensburg

Game Stats, Play by Play

SHIPPENSBURG—Julius Brown's (New Holland/Garden Spot) one-yard run with 2:50 left to play lifted Bloomsburg University to a 27-26 come-from-behind win over Shippensburg University Saturday afternoon. The win snapped a six-game losing streak for the Huskies at Seth Grove Stadium dating back to 1988.

The run by Brown capped a furious comeback for the Huskies (1-1) who trailed 26-14 with 12 minutes to play in the game. Brown's one-yard plunge and the point-after by Tim Oliver (Mountaintop/Crestwood) capped an 11-play-53 yard drive, which ate up nearly five and half minutes on the clock. A big play in the drive was a fourth and three yards to go pass from Andrew Herrmann (Brookside, NJ/Mendham) to Jamison McLaughlin (Petersburg, VA/Petersburg) that went for five yards and kept the drive alive.

Bloomsburg started quickly in the game scoring on its first possession after Shawn Butler (Newtown/Council Rock) intercepted a Jim Buffington pass at the Shippensburg 35-yard line. Four plays later Herrmann connected with Rocco Forgione (Peckville/Valley View) on a 23-yard scoring pass giving the Huskies a 7-0 with 12:19 to play in the first period.

The Red Raiders (0-2) got two field goals from Craig Lough to close the gap to 7-6 at the break despite out-gaining the Huskies in total yards (144-84) in the first half.

Bloomsburg scored on its first play from scrimmage to start the second half when Herrmann hit Tierell Johnson (Harrisburg/C.D. East) with an 80-yard scoring bomb. The long pass play gave the Huskies a 14-6 lead with 14:42 to play in the third period.

Shippensburg cut the deficit to 14-12 on a 19-yard pass from Tyler Novak to Andre McLaurin to cap a seven-play, 61-yard drive. The two-point pass though failed and the Huskies held a slim lead.

The Red Raiders got the next two scores to grab the lead for the first time in the contest. John Kuhn scored from one-yard out and with the two-point conversion took a 20-14 lead with 4:34 to play in the third. Then in the fourth Jermaine Smith caught a 20-yard scoring pass from Novak to make the margin 26-14 with 12:37 to play.

Bloomsburg began its comeback on the next series when Herrmann and Johnson hooked up again, this time for a 20-yard scoring strike with 10:25 left to play. However, the extra point was blocked and the Huskies trailed 26-20.

The Bloomsburg defense then forced Shippensburg to go three and out setting the stage for the Huskies' game-winning drive.

Herrmann finished the day 9-22 for 173 yards and three touchdowns and no interceptions. Forgione caught three passes for 40 yards and one score, while Johnson caught two passes for 100 yards and two scores.

Defensively, the Huskies got great play from Matt Keys (West Fairview/East Pennsboro) and Shawn Butler who finished with 14 tackles each. Butler had six solo and eight assisted tackles, while Keys had five solos and nine assisted.

The Huskies host Lock Haven University next week at 1 p.m. in the team's home opener. The Philly Phanatic will be on hand for the game.
