Bloomsburg Rolls to Win Over Cheyney

CHEYNEY—Freshman Josh Heck (Hazleton/Hazleton) rushed for a career-high 153 yards and two scores as Bloomsburg University rolled to a 45-14 win over Cheyney University Saturday afternoon. The win was the fifth straight for the Huskies, now 6-2, 4-0 in the PSAC Eastern Division.

Heck's previous best rushing day was a 127-yard effort against Millersville two weeks ago.

Bloomsburg jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first period when Mike Ceroli (Medford, NJ/Lenape) and Josh Heck scored on short runs. Ceroli got Bloomsburg going with a three-yard run for a touchdown to cap a 68- yard drive, while Heck scored from seven yards out to complete a 64- yard drive.

Bloomsburg's defense set up the third touchdown of the game. Senior BeJey Thomas (Bloomsburg/Bloomsburg) intercepted a Cheyney pass and returned it to the Wolves 15-yard line. Two plays later Ceroli scored his second touchdown of the game, this one from two yards out, to give Bloomsburg a 21-0 lead.

The Huskies made it 24-0 at the break when Tim Oliver connected on a 28-yard field goal with 34 seconds left before halftime.

In the third period, Bloomsburg quarterback Jack Lydic (Selinsgrove/Selinsgrove) connected with Nick Kurtz (Coplay/Whitehall) on a 55-yard touchdown pass to make it 31-0 in favor of the Huskies. Later in the period, Heck scored on a 25-yard run to put the Huskies up 38-0 heading into the fourth period.

Cheyney got on the board twice before the end of the third period when Errieck Stewart hit Ed Gedding with a four-yard scoring pass to make it a 38-7 game. The combination of Stewart to Gedding connected again, this time from six yards out, on the final play of the third period, to make it a 38-14 game.

Bloomsburg scored its final touchdown of the game with 8:24 to play when Shaun Gaul (Catawissa/Southern Columbia) ran in from 11-yards out giving the Huskies a 45-14 advantage.

Cheyney ended the day's scoring with a third Stewart to Gedding pass, this from 22-yards out to make the final 45-21.

Along with Heck's 153-yards on the ground, Mike Ceroli gained 137 yards on the day and moved into ninth on the all-time school's rushing list with 1,537 yards.

Gabe Robinson (Albrightsville/Jim Thorpe) led the Bloomsburg defense with six tackles, while Tyler Trettin (Hershey/Hershey) added five to go along with a forced fumble and a fumble recovery.

In all, Bloomsburg gained 447 yards of total offense to 270 for Cheyney and also forced five turnovers. The Huskies were also 5-5 in the red zone against Cheyney and are now 14 for their last 14 in the red zone over three games.

Bloomsburg will visit West Chester next week starting at 7 p.m.
